No. 4 Saints stuff No. 2 Tigers for MVC title

CEDAR FALLS - Reggie Schulte suffered through the worst game of his life against Cedar Falls last season when he threw five interceptions, but that's ancient history now.

Schulte completed 15 of 19 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns Friday night as No. 4 Xavier stuffed No. 2 Cedar Falls, 24-7, in a battle of Class 4A unbeatens in the UNI-Dome.

"I wanted to redeem myself, I guess," he said.

He had lots of help.

Reserve tailback Wes Gardner ran for 115 yards and Xavier's defense limited the Tigers to 189 yards of total offense as the Saints clinched the third Mississippi Valley Conference title in school history with a rare victory over Cedar Falls.

Saints outlast Prairie spikers

Sarah Homan had 44 assists and Kayla Torson 20 kills to lead Xavier to a three-set win over Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match Tuesday night at Prairie.

The Class 4A No. 7 Saints won by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 33-31.

Halle Heying had 24 digs and Torson 15 digs for Xavier.

It's OK to peek: Saints eye Tigers

The Xavier Saints don't have to avoid the urge to peek ahead anymore.

The big game is finally here.

The fourth-ranked Saints will face the second-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Friday night at 7:30.

Both clubs are 7-0. Both clubs are aiming for the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division title. And both clubs are gunning for high seeds in the Class 4A playoffs.

Sullivan keeps volleyball in perspective

Even (and especially) in defeat, Cedar Rapids Xavier volleyball coach Barb Sullivan remains calm and collected.

No squirming. No scowling. No screaming.

Games are punctuated by constant cheers of “good job” and “great shot.” Mistakes are applauded for the effort that was made.

Cougars nipped for state golf title

POLK CITY - Cedar Rapids Kennedy finished a remarkable five-year performance at the state golf meet Saturday by placing second at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Waukee edged the Cougars for the state title by one shot, 617-618.

Kennedy began the day with a one-shot lead over Waukee, 307-308, but the Cougars posted a 311 Saturday and Waukee came home with a 309 to claim the crown.

Kennedy has finished 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 4th and 2nd at the state tournament the last five years.

The Xavier Saints tied for eighth in the 12-team tournament at 645.
