Xavier sweeps a pair of 2-1 games

The Linn-Mar girls soccer team scored a pair of 2-1 wins Saturday, including a come-from-behind victory over Class 3A No. 8 Linn-Mar.

The Class 2A top-ranked Saints also beat Cedar Falls.

Xavier trailed 1-0 late into its game against Linn-Mar. But Lauren Konchar scored a tying goal with seven minutes left.

Controversial call keys Xavier past Kennedy

Isaac Frisch's goal in the seventh minute of overtime lifted Xavier past Kennedy, 2-1, Friday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game at Kennedy.

The game was the resumption of a contest from May 3 that was suspended by lightning in the ninth minute of the first half. Kennedy held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Grant Sheeley at the time of the suspension.

A controversial foul with seven minutes left in regulation gave Xavier a penalty kick that Logan Buschette converted to tie the game, 1-1.

Luehrsmann named Xavier basketball coach

Ryan Luehrsmann thought seriously about becoming a basketball coach when he finished playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes 12 years ago, but the right opportunity did not come along.

Now it has.

Luehrsmann, 34, was named the boys basketball coach at Xavier High School on Friday after spending two years as the freshman coach with the Saints.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "It's all very exciting."

Dale, Carney meet as foes for last time

Cedar Rapids Xavier senior Annie Dale and Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Rachel Carney met as opponents in their season opener Tuesday afternoon.

The next time the two share time on a soccer field it will be as teammates next year at the University of Northern Iowa where they have both signed letters of intent.

When they take the field in the Panther purple and gold it will be the first time the two electric players have joined forces and the pair is excited about the idea.

Xavier tops preseason rankings in Class 2A boys soccer

Xavier High School, a two-time defending state champion in boys soccer, tops Class 2A in preseason rankings released Wednesday.

In Class 3A, Cedar Rapids Washington ranks No. 5 and Cedar Rapids Kennedy comes in at No. 6.

Marion High School ranks No. 16 in Class 2A.

The rankings were released by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association.
