Xavier girls fall to Waterloo West bowlers

Kayla Thompson bowled a 223 game and a 430 series to lead the Xavier girls bowling team in a 2,943 to 2,389 loss to Waterloo West on Friday at May City Bowl.

Abbey Fangman rolled a 433 series for the Wahawks.

Waterloo West (2,943): Abbey Fangman 224-209=433, Makenzie Ruddy 185-233=418, Katlyn Braken 187-224=411, Amber Ovel 166-236=402, Rose Nelson 176-175=351, Jennifer Reynoza 155-153=308.

Xavier (2,389): Kayla Thompson 223-207=430, Tanya Zaugg 170-181=351, Cheyanne Crane 200-144=344, Ally Eipert 177-152=329, Jamison Janson 115-111=226, Lauren Meyer 94-99=193.

Wahawk bowlers rally over Xavier boys

The Xavier boys bowling team saw a first-round lead slip away in a 2,935 to 2,902 loss to Waterloo West on Friday at May City Bowl.

The Saints led 1,943 pins to 1,873 after the first round, but the Wahawks captured the Baker round 1,062 to 959.

Brett Young rolled a 247 game and a 418 series for Xavier.

Hadzic named to IHSSCA Hall of Fame

Amir Hadzic, head coach of the Xavier boys soccer program, has been selected for induction into the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held Feb. 20 at the Jacobsen Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Hadzic has served as head coach at Xavier since 2007 and has led the Saints to the 2010, 2011 and 2013 Iowa Class 2A state championships.

Hadzic's career record as a high school soccer coach is 154-87-3 (107-45-2 at Xavier; 47-42-1 at Prairie). He is a five-time Metro Coach of the Year and the 2010 and 2011 Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year.

“We are excited that Coach Hadzic has been selected for induction into the Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame," said Mike Winker, Xavier Activities Director. "This is a well-deserved honor for a man who is a true winner in every capacity, is a first-class role model for our students and an excellent representative of Xavier High School. The entire Xavier community is proud of Coach Hadzic."

In addition to his head coaching duties at Xavier, Hadzic is the head men's soccer coach at Mount Mercy University.

   

Boys state golf meet set at Elmcrest

The Class 4A boys state golf tournament will be held at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids Oct. 9-10, it was announced Friday.

Xavier High School will serve as the host.

Xavier girls edge Linn-Mar, 38-36

Lizzy Bailey and McKenna Andersen each scored 11 points to lead the Class 4A 11th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team to a 38-36 win over Linn-Mar on Tuesday at Linn-Mar.

Andersen also grabbed five rebounds for the Saints (12-5) and Morgan Breitbach made four steals.

Amanda Ollinger scored 13 points and blocked four shots for the Lions, who fell to 10-7 with their sixth straight loss.

XAVIER (38): Bailey 4 0-0 11, Noonan 2 0-0 4, Andersen 4 2-2 11, Breitbach 2 2-3 7, Dickes 0 0-0 0, Nelson 0 0-0 0, Drahozal 0 0-0 0, Ivester 0 2-2 2, Joens 1 1-2 3. Totals 13 7-9 38.
