Miller rolls 501 series for Xavier boys

Caleb Miller had a 501 series and Jacob Fulton had a 258 game to lead the Xavier boys bowling team to a 3,162 to 3,031 win over Dubuque Hempstead on Friday at May City Bowl.

Noah Cheever had a 411 series for Dubuque Hempstead.

Xavier (3,162): Caleb Miller 256-245=501, Brett Young 213-269=482, Jacob Fulton 258-217=475, Michael Buenzow 197-190=387, Cameron Zaugg 192-168=360, Charlie Hart 160-170=330.

Dubuque Hempstead (3,031): Noah Cheever 197-214=411, Cody Scheffert 199-203=402, Justin Lanser 177-214=391, Zach Pregler 194-195=389, Kyle Wersinger 169-205=374, Chance Brimeyer 155-173=328.

Lembeck, Gerke keep shining for Saints

It's been a tough season for the Xavier wrestling team with only 16 guys on the squad, but Clint Lembeck and Josh Gerke keep plugging away and doing a good job for the Saints.

Lembeck and Gerke struck again Thursday with pins against the Jefferson J-Hawks, but the Saints had to forfeit four bouts and lost the Mississippi Valley Conference meet 51-21.

Lembeck, ranked No. 2 at 132 pounds, wrestled up a class and stuck Michael Handley at 138 in 1:39. Gerke, ranked No. 6 at 126 pounds, pinned Seth Jellison in 4:46.

Jeff Vipond collected a pin at 106 pounds for the Saints and Thomas Pudil won a 4-0 decision at 220, giving Xavier four victories in 10 actual bouts against a strong opponent.

Xavier girls whip Hempstead 46-35

DUBUQUE – The Class 4A 11th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team used a balanced attack to beat Dubuque Hempstead 46-35 at Hempstead.

Morgan Breitbach had nine points and five assists for the Saints (9-4), and Lizzy Bailey, McKenna Anderson and Erin Drahozal each had eight points.

Hempstead fell to 4-9.

XAVIER (46): Bailey 1 6-6 8, Noonan 3 0-2 6, Andersen 2 4-4 8, Breitbach 2 5-6 9, Christianson 0 0-0 0, Dickees 0 0-0 0, Nelson 0 0-0 0, Drahozal 3 0-0 8, Ivester 2 1-4 5, Joens 0 2-2 2. Totals 13 18-24 46.

DUBUQUE HEMPSTEAD (35): Individuals not available. Totals 12 6-8 35.

Hempstead boys edge Xavier in OT

The Xavier boys basketball team let a 12-point halftime lead slip away and lost to ninth-ranked Dubuque Hempstead 51-48 in overtime Tuesday at Xavier.

The Saints led 16-10 after the first quarter and 32-20 at halftime before the Mustangs fought back with a 12-4 third-quarter run.

The score was tied 44-44 at the end of the regulation, and Hempstead took control in the overtime period to avoid the upset.

Michael Mims, had 17 points for Xavier (4-5), which was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Xavier girls push No.1 Valley to OT

WEST DES MOINES - The Xavier Saints nearly toppled one of the giants of girls basketball Saturday.

The Saints pushed top-ranked West Des Moines Valley into overtime before falling, 88-81, on the winner's home floor.

Xavier led at halftime, 41-39. The game was tied after four quarters, 76-76, but the Tigers outscored the Saints 12-5 in the extra three-minute period.

Xavier is ranked 11th in Class 4A, but the Saints sent a clear message Saturday that they can play with the top team in the top class in the state.

Lizzy Bailey led Xavier (8-4) with 22 points. Morgan Breitbach netted 18, Lexi Noonan 15 and McKenna Andersen 12. The Saints made 28 of 55 shots for 51 percent.
