Cuevas paces Saints at Sweet Initational

DUBUQUE - Kaiden Cuevas of Xavier placed second in the 400 meter dash  in 52.9 seconds Thursday at the Harold Sweet Invitational in Dubuque.

The Saints also finished second in the 4x800 relay in 8:26.47 with  Josh Gerke, Nathan Skala, Beau Van Berkum and Grayson Waither sharing the baton.

Xavier placed 11th out of 16 teams in the standings. The Kennedy Cougars won the championship with 119 points.

Tallett, Lampe lead Xavier girls track

WATERLOO - Katie Tallett and Theresa Lampe led the Xavier girls track team at the Wahawk Invitational in Waterloo Thursday.

Tallett placed third in the 3,000-meter run in 10 minutes, 52.65 seconds. Lampe finished third in the 100 hurdles in 16.39 seconds.

 

Xavier boys nicked by Prairie Hawks

The Xavier boys soccer team was clinging to a 2-1 lead over the Prairie Hawks Thursday when Xavier goalkeeper Owen McCarron collided with a Prairie forward and had to be carried off the field.

The Prairie Hawks scored two goals in the next few minutes and topped the Saints, 3-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Xavier.

Prairie, which is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, raised its perfect record  to 9-0. Xavier, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, fell to 3-2 with its second tough loss in a row.

The Saints lost at Linn-Mar Tuesday night in a PK shootout.

Andrew Russell gave Prairie a 1-0 lead Thursday, but Matt Been connected from long range for Xavier to square the match at 1-1.

The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the second half when Nick Koechner converted a penalty kick after Luke Duball had been fouled.

Russell scored his second goal on an assist from Mateaus to tie the match, 2-2, shortly after McCarron was injured and left the field. Lewis booted the game-winner on a free kick a few minutes later for the Hawks.

   

Xavier boys tennis sweeps Camanche

Jon Lansing defeated Nate Thoms, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles Thursday as the Xavier Saints swept Camanche, 9-0, in a boys tennis meet at Xavier.

Alex Hinrichs, Charlie Esker, Blake Magill, Calvin Ford and Wes Johnson also won their singles matches in straight sets.

Xavier girls bounced by Camanche

CAMANCHE - Sarah Schirm of Xavier trimmed Kylie Phillips of Camanche, 11-10, at No. 3 singles Thursday in a non-conference tennis meet in Camanche.

Camanche won the meet, 7-2.

Nina Marquardt and Emily Jasper won their match at No.1 doubles for  the Saints.
