Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cougars eye state title in final shot

The old gang of Kennedy golfers are all seniors now, heading down their final fairway together as high school athletes.

There are six of them - Davis Sutton, Conner Koberg, Cole Murdock, Tanner Stewart, Ross Grekoff and Seth Nutt - and they've accomplished some impressive things during their prep careers with major championships, conference titles and a pair of second-place showings at the state tournament the last two years.

The Cougars added another Mississippi Valley Conference title to their resume Monday, winning the Valley Division crown by a whopping 52 shots in the final round of the 54-hole event at Ellis Golf Course.

Sutton won the overall Valley championship with a 54-hole score of 217 with rounds of 65, 77 and 75 on three different courses. Koberg took medalist honors Monday with an even-par 72 and placed second overall at 225. Murdock placed third at 227, giving Kennedy a 1-2-3 sweep of the top honors.

Torson leads Saints at Dubuque

DUBUQUE - Kayla Torson collected 24 kills and 26 digs Saturday as the Xavier Saints finished with a 1-3 record at the Dubuque Invitational volleyball tournament.

The Saints lost to Bettendorf (21-12, 21-9), lost to ADM (21-10, 21-17) and defeated Muscatine (21-9, 21-9) in pool competition.

Xavier lost to Bettendorf again, 21-10, 21-19, in the playoffs.

Melanie Wertzberger had 29 assists for the Saints. Rachel Sodawasser finished with 24 assists. Madsy Richards had 23 digs and 11 kills.

No. 1 Saints roll by Maquoketa

It may seem simplistic, but Xavier Coach Duane Schulte says you seldom know how a game’s going to turn out until you start to play.

“You never know what to expect,” the highly successful 21-year veteran said Friday night after his powerhouse Saints mauled undermanned Maquoketa, 49-6.

A jam-packed home crowd and a trickling of Maquoketa fans found out soon enough how this one was going to play out when Xavier (4-1, 3-0) scored quickly on its first possession and let never let up.

The Saints also made touchdowns on the next six times they touched the ball and mercifully punted for the first time on a fourth down they could have easily made as the first half ended.

Cardinal Coach Kevin Bowman said afterward he figured the game was lost before his boys even stepped off the bus to face Xavier, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
