Koberg sparks Cougars to Spirit Hollow title

BURLINGTON - Conner Koberg fired a 1-over-par 73 Saturday to claim medalist honors and lead Kennedy to the team championship at the Spirit Hollow Invitational at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington.

Frank Lindwall of Washington placed second with a 2-over 74.

Kennedy topped Dowling for the championship, 310-318. Linn-Mar finished third, Xavier fourth, Washington fifth and Prairie seventh.

Davis Sutton placed fourth for Kennedy with a 77. Trevor McCann led Linn-Mar with a 79. Matt Neumeyer shot a 79 for Xavier. Mitch Lorenz topped Prairie with an 83.

No.1 Saints slay No.5 Assumption

DAVENPORT - The top-ranked Xavier Saints collected their first victory as a Class 3A football team Thursday night by pounding No.5 Davenport Assumption, 30-6, in a non-district game at the Brady Street Stadium in Davenport.

Jay Kortemeyer carried the ball 27 times for 184 yards as the Saints (1-1) rolled up 300 yards on the ground. The Xavier defense limited Assumption (0-2) to four first downs and just 107 yards of total offense.

Xavier quarterback Bryce Schulte scored on three short runs of 4, 1 and 4 yards. Dallas Klein kicked three field goals of 22, 24 and 21 yards and also was 3-for-3 on PATs.

Sean Murphy ran six times for 55 yards and Nic Ekland carried the ball six times for 52 yards for Xavier. The Saints ran the ball 60 times and threw it only seven times in the ballgame. Schulte hit 4 of 6 passes for 53 yards and no interceptions.

Xavier hosts No.3 Solon next Friday night.

Even paces Saints in MVC golf meet

Jordan Even shot a 1-over-par 36 Thursday to help the Xavier Saints win a Mississippi Valley Conference golf meet at St. Andrews.

Ben Greif led Linn-Mar with a 3-over 38 and was the runner-up.

Bouchard, Bales nominated for awards

Xavier High School graduates Colleen Bouchard and Charlie Bales are top-30 finalists for national collegiate awards.

Bouchard and Bales played soccer at Xavier and graduated in 2010.

Bouchard is a top-30 finalist from the College of Saint Benedict for the NCAA 2014 Woman of the Year Award.

Bales is a top-30 candidate from Western Illinois University for the Collegiate Men's Soccer Senior Class Award.

 

Busswitz leads Prairie spikers past Saints

Kate Busswitz had 13 kills and five ace serves to lead Prairie to a 14-25, 25-10, 25-11, 25-22 Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball win over visiting Xavier on Tuesday night.

Megan Spengeler added seven kills for the Hawks. Jenni Lockhart had 13 digs while Mallory Jones and Kendra Gaskill had 18 and 12 assists respectively.

For the Saints, Kayla Torson had 13 digs, nine kills and three blocks. Madsy Richards had 17 digs, eight kills and a pair of blocks.
