Daniels honored in MVC baseball

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Zach Daniels has been named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Division on the Mississippi Valley Conference all-star baseball teams.

Daniels is hitting .471 for the state-bound Cougars with 32 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 23 attempts. He also has an 8-1 record on the mound with a 1.02 ERA.

Daniels, a second baseman when he's not pitching, was joined on the Mississippi Division first team by pitcher Sammy Lizarraga and shortstop Derek Jacobus of Kennedy.

Spencer Van Scoyoc of Jefferson made the Mississippi Division first team in the outfield.

Pitcher Ryan Flaherty, first baseman Adam Pick, infielder Colin O'Connell and outfielder Bryce Grimm of Xavier were named first team in the Valley Division.

Third baseman Johnny Dobbs and Matt Troendle of Washington also made the top unit in the Mississippi Division. They were joined by outfielder Manny Jeffery from Linn-Mar.

Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer and his assistants were named the Mississippi Division Staff of the Year.

Metro Players in Pro Baseball

The Metro Sports Report provides a daily update on Metro graduates who are playing pro baseball. Here is the report through July 27:

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier), Chicago Cubs, OF Sweeney went 0-for-1 Sunday with two walks. He was 1-for-3 Saturday with a home run, his second homer in two days. Sweeney is hitting .222 (34-for-153) with 3 homers and 16 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers) Schebler went 1-for-3 Sunday with a double, RBI, run scored and walk. He is hitting .268 (99-for-370) with 18 homers and 53 RBIs.

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays) Sweeney has been released by the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He was hitting .222 (8 for 36) with four doubles and an RBI.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins) Christensen went 0-for-4 Sunday. He is hitting .287 with 7 home runs and 56 RBIs.

JON KELLER (Xavier), Frederick, P, Class A, Carolina League (Orioles) Keller (0-0, 8.31) did not pitch Sunday.

MITCH KELLER (Xavier), Bradenton, P, Rookie, Gulf Coast League (Pirates) Keller (0-0, 3.00) did not pitch Sunday.

ANDREW HANSE (Linn-Mar), Bowling Green, P, Class A, Midwest League (Tampa Bay). Hanse (0-3, 5.93) pitched one inning on Saturday. He allowed one hit and one unearned run.

DAKOTA FREESE (Washington), Athletics, P, Rookie Arizona League (Oakland) Freese has been placed on the 60-day Disabled List and probably will not pitch again until the fall.

Sommer tops All-Metro softball team

Katie Sommer spent only year on the Linn-Mar High School softball team after moving here from Dubuque, but she made the most of it.

Sommer hit a sizzling .617 for the Lions this season, stole 57 bases, averaged two hits per game and displayed amazing skills at shortstop.

The Metro softball coaches honored Sommer Monday by naming her the Athlete of the Year on the All-Metro Softball Team.

Nikki Price of Xavier and her assistant coaches were named the Staff of the Year.

The Jefferson J-Hawks, who have qualified for the Class 5A state tournament, led the All-Metro team with three first-team selections with Maddie Hansen, Alyssa Olson and Erin Kuba.

Erin Drahozal and Hayley Deutmeyer were honored on the first team from Xavier. Jessi Puk and Bria Lenten made the top honor squad from

Washington. Gabi Carter and Natalie Rumer were named from Prairie. Sommer and Maddy Ryan were selected from Linn-Mar. Haley Vanourney from Marion High School also made the first team.

Saints trip Assumption for 22nd win

The Xavier Saints trimmed Davenport Assumption, 7-6, in a prep baseball game at Ken Charipar Field Wednesday night.

Colin O'Connell had three hits with a double and RBI for Xavier. John Schmidt broke a 6-6 tie in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI double.

The Saints finished the regular season with a 22-17 record. Xavier will face Western Dubuque in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night in Epworth.

Pick, Winker lift Saints by Solon

SOLON - Adam Pick and Calvin Winker combined on a two-hit shutout Monday night as the Xavier Saints blanked Solon, 1-0, at Solon.

Winker got the victory in relief.

Hunter Baldus drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Xavier raised its record to 21-17. Solon fell to 19-15.
