Xavier girls sweep Waterloo West

WATERLOO - The Waterloo West softball team put runners on base but couldn’t get them home to open Wednesday’s doubleheader against Cedar Rapids Xavier, then couldn’t keep the Saints off the bases in the nightcap.

Xavier won the first game, 2-0, then went off for a 15-2 victory in five innings in the second contest.

The Wahawks (24-16) outhit the Class 4A fifth-ranked Saints (33-6) in the opener, but stranded seven baserunners. Jaclyn Spencer was the tough-luck loser in the pitcher’s circle and her 2-for-3 performance that included a double wasn’t enough for the offense.

In game two, Kourtney Medina roped a double and Anna Doering came up with a triple to lead the Wahawks.

Game 1

Xavier          100 001 0 - 2 4 0
Waterloo West   000 000 0 - 0 6 1
