J-Hawks, Jenks win more gold medals

DES MOINES - Jasmine Blue runs fast for a reason.

"I hate getting second," she said with a sweet, determined smile. "I love first."

Blue had that loving feeling Saturday afternoon with a gutsy anchor to help Jefferson win the sprint medley at the Class 4A state track meet in Des Moines.

Ashley Norem of Urbandale made a spirited bid to pull ahead of Blue on the 400 leg of the medley, but Blue refused to concede.

"I felt her the whole time, but I knew I had to do it," said Blue. "I already knew how it was going to feel if I was going to get second."

And as she said before, "I hate second."

Saints capture regional tennis title

The Xavier Saints rolled by Western Dubuque, 5-1, Saturday to capture the Class 1A regional girls tennis title at the Xavier courts.

The Saints will face Dubuque Wahlert in the opening round of the state tournament in Waterloo Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Kylie DeWees won a tough victory over Rose Simon-Ressler at No.1 singles, 7-5, 6-4.

Allison Jasper, Jeanne Bouchard, Emma Deignan and Katie Neumeyer also won their singles matches for Xavier.

Marion girls join soccer rankings

The Marion High School girls soccer team popped into the state rankings in the No. 15 spot in Class 2A Friday, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Indians (7-4) were not ranked last week.

The Xavier Saints dropped one spot in the Class 2A rankings to No. 3. Waverly-Shell Rock and North Scott are ranked 1-2 in Class 2A.

Linn-Mar held onto the No. 2 spot in Class 3A and Prairie remained No. 10 in Class 3A. Bettendorf topped the 3A rankings again.

Prairie boys nip Saints, 1-0

Seth Rinderknecht scored on a long throw-in midway through the first half Friday as Prairie nudged the Xavier Saints, 1-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer match at John Wall Field.

Xavier keeper Nick Huss got his fingers on the throw-in, but the ball deflected into the goal for the only tally of the night.

Prairie girls boot Saints in Shootout

Cedar Rapids Prairie trimmed Xavier, 2-1, in a PK Shootout Thursday afternoon in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer match at Xavier's Heco Field.

Alexa Martin scored for Prairie during regulation and Brylee Bastian countered for Xavier. Neither team scored in overtime and the Prairie Hawks won the Shootout, 3-2.

Maleah Baloch collected an assist on Martin's goal for Prairie.

Prairie is ranked No. 10 in Class 3A and Xavier is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A
