Bertsch tames Ellis Park with 73

Xavier High School senior Maddie Bertsch fired a 1-over-par 73 to claim medalist honors at the Kennedy Invitational Monday at Ellis Park Golf Course.

Grace Winker of Xavier was the runner-up with an 81 as the Saints won the team championship by three strokes ahead of Linn-Mar, 344-347. Kennedy and Prairie tied for sixth in the eight-team field at 401.

Lauren Coughlin shot a 10-over 82 for Linn-Mar and Teresa Lopez Moreno finished with an 83 for the Lions.

Sweeney is on the 15-Day Disabled List with a strained hamstring in his right leg. He is hitting .200 (11 for 55) with 6 RBIs.

SCOTT SCHEBLER (CR Prairie), Chattanooga, OF, Double-A, Southern League (Dodgers)
Schebler went 1-for-4 Sunday. He is hitting .245 (35 for 143) with 17 runs, 7 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs and 24 RBIs

KELLEN SWEENEY (CR Jefferson), Dunedin, IF, Advanced A, Florida State League (Blue Jays)
Sweeney did not play Sunday. He is hitting .000 (0 for 12) this season in 3 games.

CHAD CHRISTENSEN (CR Washington), Kernels, OF/IF, Class A, Midwest League (Twins)
Christensen went 1-for-3 Sunday with an RBI, two runs and two walks. He is hitting .279 (38 for 136) with 14 RBIs.

Maddie Bertsch wins Metro Spotlight Award

Xavier senior Maddie Bertsch is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bertsch is one of the top golfers in the state and leads Class 4A in scoring with a 78.0 average.

Bertsch helped the Saints place second at the 2013 state meet at the Ames Golf & Country Club by finishing seventh in the individual standings. She also played in the state meet as a freshman in 2011 when she tied for 19th in the standings.

Xavier has captured the CRANDIC meet, the Linn-Mar Invitational and the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season with Bertsch leading the way. She plans to continue her golf career at the University of Northern Iowa.

The 2014 regional meet is scheduled for May 27 at the Waverly Golf Course and the state meet is scheduled for June 2-3 at the Ames Golf & Country Club.

Bertsch was also a member of the Xavier basketball team that won a state title in 2013.

Saints, Lions stay No.2 in poll

The Xavier Saints and Linn-Mar Lions held their lofty spots in the girls soccer rankings Friday by the IGHSAU.

The Saints are ranked No.2 in Class 2A and the Lions are ranked No.2 in Class 3A.

The Prairie Hawks stayed No.10 in the Class 3A rankings for the second straight week.

The top-ranked teams are Davenport Assumption in Class 1A, North Scott in Class 2A and Bettendorf in Class 3A.

Indians, Saints win 7 titles

The Marion and Xavier boys track teams combined to capture seven events at the Class 3A state qualifier at Thomas Park Thursday.

Jordan Garthwaite won the 400 meter dash, Colton Forster claimed the 3200 meter run and Devin Quinn took the high jump as the Marion Indians placed third in the team standings. The Indians also won the 4x800 meter relay with Jacob Manderscheid, Austin Yirkovsky, Garthwaite and Trevor Hardman.

Nick Stark was a double-winner for Xavier in the 100 meter dash and long jump as the Saints placed fourth in the team standings. Xavier also claimed the 4x400 relay with Josh Gerke, Joe Welch, Evan Gradoville and Noah Clasen.
