Xavier girls stay No. 1 in soccer poll

The Xavier Saints held onto their No.1 spot in the Class 2A girls soccer rankings Friday despite losing to Dubuque Hempstead this week. Hempstead climbed from No.6 to No.4 in the Class 3A poll.

The Linn-Mar Lions jumped two spots to No.2 in the Class 3A rankings after defeating Kennedy Thursday night. The Cougars fell from No.2 to No.9.

CLASS 3A

1. Bettendorf (3-0), 2. Linn-Mar (2-0), 3. Iowa City West (4-0), 4. Hempstead (3-0), 5. Johnston (3-0), 6. Waukee (2-0), 7. West Des Moines Valley (2-1), 8. Dowling Catholic (1-1), 9. Kennedy (3-1), 10. Muscatine (2-1).

CLASS 2A

1. Xavier (1-1), 2. Ankeny Centennial (3-0), 3. North Scott (1-1), 4. Pleasant Valley (2-1), 5. Waverly-Shell Rock (4-0), 6. Lewis Central (3-0), 7. Pella (4-0), 8. Ankeny (1-1), 9. 4 Metro teams ranked in boys soccer

The four premier boys soccer teams in the Metro area are ranked 2-3-4-5 in the polls this week by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IAHSSCA).

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.2 in Class 2A. Kennedy is ranked No. 3, Linn-Mar is No. 4 and Washington is No. 5 in Class 3A, through matches of April 12.

Xavier fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in Class 2A. Norwalk replaced the Saints at the top of the rankings.

Kennedy remained No. 3 in Class 3A, but Linn-Mar and Washington traded spots in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Iowa City West is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Johnston.

Prairie dropped out of the 3A rankings this week.

Jefferson boys trim Xavier, 5-4

Jefferson took two of three doubles matches to edge Xavier, 5-4, in boys tennis action Tuesday at Jefferson.

Three of the matches went to a third set and all three were won by the Saints, but it wasn't enough to overcome a strong effort by the J-Hawks.

Zach Denny and Jason Chung won both in singles and doubles for Jefferson.

Defensive mistakes costly for Xavier

DUBUQUE - Two defensive miscues by Xavier led to a pair of first-half goals as Dubuque Hempstead downed the Saints, 2-0, on Tuesday in boys soccer action.

Xavier turned up the pressure in the second half, but the Mustangs went into a defensive mode and were able to keep the Saints off the board.

 

Xavier girls nipped by IC West

Simran Sarin's 11-10 win over Eliza Sundermann at No.6 singles proved to be the difference as Iowa City West edged Xavier, 5-4, in girls tennis action Tuesday at Xavier.

The teams split six singles matches and the Women of Troy prevailed in two of the three doubles matches.
