Xavier's Miller 2nd at Class 1A state bowling

DES MOINES - Caleb Miller came up 15 pins shy in his bid to repeat as Class 1A state bowling champion Monday at Plaza Lanes.

Miller, a junior from Xavier, shot a 490 set with games of 279 and 211 and finished second in the individual portion of the boys tournament.

Marion's Bre Smith rolled a 433 set and tied for fourth in girls individual competition. She was 45 pins behind champion Shelby Carrier of DeWitt Central.

Saints hold off DeWitt, 51-42

Lizzy Bailey and Hailey Deutmeyer combined for 31 points to power No.13 Xavier past DeWitt Central, 51-42, Saturday night in a Class 4A regional semifinal girls basketball game at Xavier.

The defending state champion Saints (11-11) advance to Tuesday's regional final against 10th-ranked North Scott (16-6) at Mount Vernon.

Bailey scored 16 points and Deutmeyer 15.

Baker, Lembeck, Turner take 3rd at state

DES MOINES - One guy was elated, another guy philosophical in defeat and the third guy sorely disappointed.

That's what happens when you finish third at the state wrestling tournament. The level of happiness - or sadness - depends on your point of view.

Cole Turner (285) of Xavier, Ross Lembeck (152) of Linn-Mar and Brenden Baker (106) of Jefferson all placed third at the Class 3A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Saturday afternoon.

Burger's 23 fuel Saints' barrage

IOWA CITY - Mitchell Burger scored 23 points and Adam McDermott added 15 to lead Xavier past Iowa City High, 69-44, Friday night in MVC boys basketball.

McDermott also grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists for the Saints (13-8, 9-7).

Xavier made 11 3-pointers. Burger had four, McDermott three.
