Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Deutmeyer paces Saints by J-Hawks

Jefferson Coach Jason Edwards thought his team's 59-45 loss at Xavier Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game was because the Saints showed more energy.

Xavier Coach Tom Lilly felt it was something all together different.

“It's called contagion,” he said. “That's a smart man's term. It means to have a collective influence on others. It's like the flu.”

Whatever it was, the game was decided when the Saints went on a 17-0 run over a five-minute span in the second quarter.

Saints end 0-for-29 skid against Lions

It was long overdue when a bleachers-full of Xavier students started chanting “Just like football” in the waning moments of a 62-57 boys basketball win at Linn-Mar Friday night.

The Saints, no question, have owned the gridiron of late.

But when the basketball boys pulled out their victory on some clutch plays at the end, it marked the first time in school history (going back to 1998) that they've managed to turn the trick against the Lions.

“Zero and 29 before tonight,” Saints assistant coach Brad Stovie pointed out as fans mobbed the players. “Yeah, I'd say this was a pretty special night.”

Lembeck brothers help Lions, Saints

You'll have to excuse the Lembeck brothers if they rooted against their own teammates a little bit Thursday night.

Ross Lembeck wrestles for Linn-Mar and his brother, Clint, competes for Xavier, and their teams faced each other in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Xavier.

Ross Lembeck, a senior who is ranked No.1 at 152 pounds for the Lions, returned from a knee injury and pinned his opponent. Clint Lembeck, a sophomore who is ranked No.4 at 132 pounds for the Saints, defeated sixth-ranked Matt Wempen, 5-1.
