Duane Schulte of Xavier High School has been named the 2013 4A Coach of the Year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA).
This is the second time Schulte has received the award, the first time coming after a 4A state championship in 2006.
Xavier assistant coach Jim O’Connell was named the 2013 IFCA 4A Assistant Coach of the Year.
Last Updated on Friday, 24 January 2014 18:58WATERLOO - Waterloo West Coach John Curta had little to fault with the way his team played for all but the final five minutes of Thursday's makeup game with Xavier at Siddens Gymnasium.
West valued the basketball on offense and held Xavier in check on defense as it built a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter. But after turning the ball over just five times in the first three quarters combined, West turned the ball over five times in the final five minutes.
The Saints turned those miscues into points as it outscored West 12-4 down the stretch to secure a hard-fought, 58-56, Mississippi Valley Conference road win.
Last Updated on Thursday, 23 January 2014 23:06IOWA CITY - Andrew Billick, Clint Lembeck and Nick Drahozal each recorded a pair of pins to lead Xavier to a sweep of a Mississippi Valley Conference double dual wrestling meet.
Xavier pounded Dubuque Senior, 66-12, and then beat host Iowa City High, 45-24.
Xavier had five pins against Senior and four against City High.
Billick recorded his pins at 132 pounds, Lembeck at 138 and Drahozal at 152.
Clint Lembeck of Xavier captured the 132-pound title at the Loyd Schaffer Invitational Saturday with a 10-6 victory over Logan Mays of Wilton in the finals at Marion High School.
Independence won the championship of the 10-team event with 222.5 points. Xavier finished sixth and Marion was ninth.
Josh Gerke (120) and Nick Drahozal (145) placed third for Xavier. Jerry Duball (138) and Sean Ickes (170) were fourth.
Colin Conway took second place at 138 pounds for Marion. Caleb Conway (132) finished third and Dalton Gardner (195) was fourth.
WEST DES MOINES – Adam McDermott scored 22 points and Mitchell Burger added 17 to lead Xavier to a 58-53 win over Dowling Catholic Saturday in a non-conference boys basketball game.
Both teams hit 21 field goals and seven free throws but Xavier made five more 3-point goals. McDermott connected on four 3s and Burger three.
Xavier (6-5) led the entire game.
Dowling (6-6) rallied from a 41-29 deficit after the third quarter. Jack Green’s 17 points paced the Maroons. Ben Olson and Eric Austin each scored eight points.
