Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Dowling girls whip Saints, 67-41

WEST DES MOINES – Third-ranked Dowling Catholic built 12-point halftime lead and cruised past Xavier, 67-41, Saturday in a non-conference girls basketball game.

Junior Audrey Faber led Dowling (11-1) with 16 points, while Luci Sarcone and Becca Hittner each added 12 points. Hittner had a game-high eight assists.

Hayley Deutmeyer led Xavier (7-7) with 12 points.

Xavier girls trounce Wahlert, 63-31

Hayley Deutmeyer scored 15 points and Abby Watson added 10 Friday night as the Xavier Saints rolled by Dubuque Wahlert, 63-31, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.

Morgan Breitbach had nine points for the Saints (7-6) and Maddie Bertsch had eight.

Xavier made 24 of 27 free throws in the game. The Saints outscored Wahlert, 17-2, in the second quarter and led 37-17 at intermission.

Xavier boys tripped by Wahlert, 69-60

DUBUQUE - Calvin Winker scored 26 points Friday night and Adam McDermott added 22, but they weren't enough to prevent Xavier from dropping a 69-60 verdict to Dubuque Wahlert in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Dubuque.

Winker and McDermott combined for 48 points for the Saints (5-5, 2-4), but the rest of the club combined for only 12 markers.

Josh Carter, a 6-foot-5 junior, pumped in 28 points for Wahlert.

Prairie Hawks pin Saints, Wahawks

The Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling team swept a double-dual against Xavier and Waterloo West Thursday night by a combined score of 125-17.

The Hawks pinned the Saints, 53-12, and flattened the Wahawks, 72-5.

Josh Wenger (138) and Trey Blaha (152) collected two pins for Prairie. Marcus England (106), Dylan Kleinschmidt (113), Sam Uthoff (120), Jarod Cadena (182) and Jonah Manson also won twice on the mat.

Heitland helps Cougars scalp Saints

New Kennedy Coach Jon McKowen had a few words of advice for Drew Heitland when basketball practice began in November.

Get a haircut, son.

"He was like, 'You can't be looking like a girl,'" Heitland said Tuesday night. "So I just cut it and it's out of my face now.

"I just went down the street to Cost Cutters from Kennedy and they chopped it all off."

Heitland has a good look at the basket these days without all that long hair in his eyes and he proved it Tuesday with a big game against the Xavier Saints.

The burly football player scored a career-high 17 points to help the Cougars outscore the Saints, 85-76, in an entertaining game at the Xavier gym.
