Cougars build big lead, hold on to beat Saints

Kennedy girls basketball coach Tony Vis didn’t spend much time in the locker room after his team’s 54-46 home win Tuesday night over rival Xavier.

The time for talking will come prior to practice on Wednesday.

Despite sporting 9-2 overall record (4-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference) and a No. 6 state ranking in Class 5A, Vis was not a happy man after Tuesday’s game.

“We’ve had three straight games of lackluster effort,” he said. “We’ve had lackluster execution and I’m just tired of watching it.”

No.2 Valley too strong for Saints

The battle between the No.2 team in Class 5A and the No.5 team in Class 4A was not much of a fight Saturday afternoon.

Madi Agey led a balanced attack with 13 points as West Des Moines Valley bounced Xavier, 55-31, in a Rivalry Saturday game at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Morgan Breitbach scored 10 points for Xavier (6-5). West Des Moines Valley raised its record to 10-0.

McDermott, Winker lift Saints by Wash

When the chips were down Friday night on their home floor, the Xavier boys counted on their two aces.

Sharpshooters Adam McDermott and Calvin Winker accounted for 13 points in a fourth-quarter surge that brought the Saints from a seven-point deficit to a come-from-behind 63-58 win over Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

“They're our money players,” said Xavier Coach Ryan Luehrsmann, “and they rose to the occasion. They made their shots when it counted.”

Xavier boys roll by Warriors

Xavier built a 186-pin lead in the first round and rolled past Washington, 2831-2621, Friday in boys bowling at Lancer Lanes.

Xavier's Brett Young rolled a 234 for high game. Caleb Miller's 410 series paced the Saints.

Washington's Chris Schuttloffel had high series of 419. Bryan Cline had a 224 game for the Warriors.

Pernicka powers Warriors past Saints

Keely Pernicka had the line Friday for the Washington girls, rolling a 222 game and 405 series that led the Warriors past Xavier, 2581-1870, in a bowling match at Lancer Lanes.

Kelly Waters had a 207 game for Washington.

Kayla Thompson's 162 was high game for the Saints.
