No. 9 Wahlert escapes Saints boys

DUBUQUE – The shot was in the air, and Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins thought it was “dead on.”

Instead, Kevin Hosch’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer hit off the back iron, and Dubuque Wahlert escaped with a 59-56 victory over the Saints Thursday at Wahlert High School.

The game was moved to Thursday after a blizzard forced its postponement Tuesday night.

Clasen scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. Xavier trailed by 11 points, 56-45, with four minutes left in regulation, but nearly rallied to upset the Class 3A No. 9 Golden Eagles.

“Kevin got open, but he just missed,” Jenkins said. “Wahlert is a good team, and this is a tough place to play.

“I thought we played well enough to win.”

Xavier (4-12, 3-8 MVC) went on a 11-3 run late in the fourth to narrow Wahlert’s lead to 59-56. The Saints had one last shot after calling a timeout in front of their bench.

3 Saints get 2nds at MVC tourney

Amid all the grim-faced and tight-lipped wrestlers at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Saturday stood A.J. Garcia, the 215-pounder from Linn-Mar.

He was all smiles.

Garcia upset top-ranked Conner Herman of Cedar Rapids Jefferson to win the 215-pound crown and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the 14-team field at Xavier.

"I was ready to go for that match," he said. "It's a real big accomplishment for me."

Garcia dominated Herman, 9-3, in the biggest upset of the day, handing Herman his only loss of the season to a fellow 215-pounder.

"I'm building my way up toward state," said Garcia. "This is going to motivate me."

Garcia, ranked No. 8, raised his record to 38-4 and led seven Metro wrestlers to the top of the victory stand at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

Saints fall to another ranked foe

A possible concussion. A sprained finger. Another painful loss.

That was the story Thursday for the 14th-ranked Xavier girls basketball team, which lost a tight game to a ranked opponent for the third time in six days.

Iowa City West clinched the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 49-45 victory over the 14th-ranked Saints at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

The third-ranked Trojans won their first conference title since 1979, snapping a drought that lasted 32 years. "We're ecstatic," West Coach B.J. Mayer remarked.

Ecstasy for Iowa City West, agony for Xavier.

The Saints lost to 11th-ranked Dowling Catholic, 38-37, Saturday on a long 3-pointer in the final seconds, then lost to fourth-ranked Waterloo West, 32-29, on Tuesday.

Saints boys trimmed by Iowa City West

IOWA CITY – Iowa City West’s sophomore duo of Dondre Alexander and Jeremy Morgan combined for 26 points Friday night as the Trojans outmuscled Cedar Rapids Xavier, 56-51, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Iowa City.

West took advantage of two consecutive turnovers by the Saints late in the fourth quarter that resulted in two field goals and a 52-48 lead with less than a minute remaining.

“There were about two or three possessions where we lost contact with their shooters and they made us pay for it,” said Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins.

Ryan Mains led the Saints with nine points and four rebounds. Mack Mattke added seven points off the bench, including a key 3-pointer that put Xavier within one point with two minutes remaining.
