Hembera named all-state by Register

Cedar Valley Christian sophomore Shelby Hembera has been named second team all-state in girls basketball by the Des Moines Register in Class 1A.

Hembera, a 6-foot post player, had the top scoring average among all Class 1A players this season at 22 points per game, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Hembera is the first all-state player for Cedar Valley Christian since the Huskies joined the Iowa state associations for the 2011-12 school year.

The Register's Class 1A first team featured Lexi Ackerman (Central Lyon), Alee Hugen (Twin Cedars), Samantha Meyers (Grundy Center), Paige Danner (Ar-We-Va) and Renee Maneman (Newell-Fonda).

Highland ends Cedar Valley's season, 81-70

RIVERSIDE - Cedar Valley Christian School assistant basketball coach Dick Hodge sounded like a coach who actually gave a hoot after his team's Class 1A district tournament basketball game at Highland High School Thursday night.

His team did, too.

The problem was stopping Highland senior Jake Hootman, who scored a career-high 33 points in an 81-70 win.

Cedar Valley girls bumped from playoffs

LONE TREE - It took a special defense to knock the special girls from Cedar Valley Christian out out of the Class 1A regional basketball tournament Tuesday night.

The Lisbon Lions put a tourniquet on Cedar Valley star Shelby Hembera in the second half and clipped the Huskies, 39-32, in the second round of the tournament at Lone Tree.

Hembera led all Class 1A players in the state heading into Tuesday's game with a 22.4 scoring average, but she did not make a basket in the second half against Lisbon and finished with 14 points.

Huskies caught fire when Muhlbach returned

SHELLSBURG - Will Muhlbach's right knee was bothering him when the basketball season began, so the 6-foot-5 senior decided to skip his final season at Cedar Valley Christian and support his teammates from the stands instead.

It hurt almost as much to sit and watch his lifelong friends playing ball without him.

"I went to one of the games and we weren't 100 percent, so it was kind of hard to watch that," he said Monday night. "So once my knee got better I decided I would go out."

That was in mid-December, and the Huskies have been riding high ever since.
