HLV blasts Cedar Valley in short tilt

With the temperature near 100 degrees at kickoff, it turns out the cheerleaders from HLV may have been the hardest-working bunch Friday night at LaSalle Field.

Each time their team scored against woefully undermanned and over-matched Cedar Valley Christian, two of the girls did push-ups while the rest did jumping-jacks for each point on the scoreboard.

By the time the score reached 70-6 at halftime, they cut back to just one push-up or jumping-jack for every 10 points.

And it was then, too, that the home team Cedar Valley Huskies asked that the game be called.

Huskies win 'Wall/Found' spirit award

The Cedar Valley Christian football team will receive a "Just Drew It/Live Like Line" award for its sportsmanship, dignity and valor.

The award is named after former Cedar Rapids Kennedy golfer Drew Wall and former Iowa City West volleyball player Caroline Found. Wall lost his battle with cancer last November, and Found died in a moped accident two years ago.

The award is presented on behalf of the Wall and Found families.

Cedar Valley Christian lost all nine of its football games last season by lopsided margins, but the Huskies have continued to work hard and display good sportsmanship despite having a small, inexperienced team.

Undaunted Huskies eager for Year 3

The members of the Cedar Valley Christian football team say there's more to playing the game than wins and losses.

There are intangibles and rewards for working hard, even if the scores don't show it.

The Huskies lost all nine of their games last season by lopsided tallies. The average final score was 75-12, and all told they were outscored by a whopping margin of 678 to 110.

Coach Ed Betsworth knows those scores are pretty ugly. "They were horrible," he acknowledged.

The Huskies, undaunted, are back for their third year of IHSAA eight-man football, facing another uphill climb with smile on their faces.

"It's a lot of fun," said senior McKeon Silver. "Personally, I didn't care about the scores. I just enjoyed playing.

"I love our sportsmanship," he added. "Everyone is good sports. When we hit somebody, we help them back up. We're a family. I love that."
