Baseball tourney pairings announced

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the pairings for the postseason baseball tournaments in Class 3A and 4A on Tuesday and four Metro teams got first-round home dates.

Xavier got the top seed in substate 3 and will host No.6 seed Waterloo East when the Class 4A tournament opens on July 19. Prairie is the No.2 seed in the same substate and the Hawks will host No.5 seed Waterloo West.

Linn-Mar is the No.2 seed in substate 6 and the Lions will host Washington. Third-seeded Kennedy will host Iowa City High. Sixth-seeded Jefferson travels to No.1 seeded Iowa City West.

The highest remaining seed in each substate after the first round gets a bye into the substate finals.

Huskies win 1st game in school history

TAMA - It took two years and 35 games, but the Cedar Valley Christian baseball team finally won a game Saturday.

The Huskies defeated the Meskwaki Settlement School, 19-4, in four innings in Tama to snap their 34-game losing streak.

Cedar Valley Christian finished 0-18 last year in its first season of IHSAA competition and began this season with 16 straight losses.

Zielke hits 2nd homer for Huskies

Spencer Zielke hit the second home run in school history for Cedar Valley Christian Thursday when the Huskies lost a doubleheader to BGM, 18-3 and 16-0, in Fairfax.

Zielke hit a two-run shot over the left-field fence in the first game.

Huskies score 7 in loss to Springville

Drew Gustafson drove in two runs Saturday, but Cedar Valley Christian dropped a 12-7 loss to Springville at Daniels Park.

The Huskies (0-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-base throwing error with the bases loaded.

Four walks and a pair of singles helped produce four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gustafson and Evan Koch had RBI singles.
