Hembera nets 25 as CVC girls fall

MAYNARD - Sophomore Shelby Hembera scored 25 points Thursday night as the Cedar Valley Christian girls basketball team lost to West Central, 43-33, in Maynard.

Hembera made 11 fields for the Huskies (1-8) and was 3-for-8 at the foul line.

Madee Grimm led West Central (2-9) with 13 points.

Hembera leading her team to the future

Are we having fun yet? You couldn’t blame Cedar Valley Christian basketball player Shelby Hembera for asking.

The current Metro girls scoring leader, she’s an uncommonly good athlete playing her heart out for an undermanned team from a tiny high school – far from the bright lights of the Metro’s marquee teams and games.

After leading her team to four wins as a freshman last year during the Huskies’ first season in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, she grew an inch, added a bit of heft to her slender frame and returned for her sophomore season as an even more dominating presence on the court. Her average hovers around 20 points per game.

Landis pours in 28 for CVC boys

WINTHROP - Jon Landis scored 28 points to lead Cedar Valley Christian past East Buchanan, 65-29, Saturday in boys basketball.

The Huskies (4-6) were 0-for-2 from the free-throw line, but knocked down nine 3-pointers. Landis potted four treys, Evan Koch three.

Jeremy Strutz added 12 points.

Cedar Valley girls fall at East Buchanan

WINTHROP - East Buchanan held Shelby Hembera to 11 points Saturday and defeated Cedar Valley Christian, 45-31, in a girls basketball game in Winthrop.

Izzy Hoffman scored 10 points for the Huskies (1-7).

Andrea Hughson led East Buchanan (3-9) with 15 points.
