Cedar Valley rolls by Harmony, 65-6

Before each one of his booming kickoffs, Cedar Valley Christian’s Mike Scroggs yells, “Huskies, are you ready?”

He ended up hoarse and with a sore right foot before the night was over Thursday as his teammates proved plenty ready by winning their season opener, 65-6, over Harmony of Farmington on the Huskies' home field at LaSalle Middle School.

It was just Cedar Valley’s second victory ever (to go with 24 losses) as it begins its fifth season of eight-man football. The other was at Harmony 30-20 a year ago.

“This feels great,” said hyped-up senior Colin Heeren, who scored on the kickoff return to open the second half, immediately intercepted a pass and scored again on a 24-yard sweep. (He’d scored the play before, too, but the touchdown was called back for holding.)

"But we’re not gonna stop at just one win," he said. "We’re gonna win at least four this year, I promise, maybe more.”

Cedar Valley looks to keep improving

The Cedar Valley Christian football team suffered a series of lopsided defeats in the early stages of its development with scores like 93-16 and 91-0, but the Huskies hung in there and kept plugging away.

Then came the reward.

Cedar Valley began the 2014 campaign with a 30-20 victory at Harmony for the first victory in school history. They did not win another game last year and finished 1-8, but the Huskies feel things are looking up as they head into Year 5.

"We're going for four wins. Four or five," said senior Drew Gustafson, who began playing for the Huskies as a freshman. "We have a lot more athletes than we had the last couple of years.

"The freshmen who came up this year are big, strong guys who have played football before, unlike past years."

Lions, Cougars placed in same substate

The dream of having four Metro baseball teams reach the Class 4A state tournament was dashed by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Thursday.

The IHSAA put No. 7 Linn-Mar and No. 9 Kennedy in the same substate, which means only one of them can make the state tournament. The Lions swept the Cougars in a conference doubleheader earlier this season and have the edge for the No. 1 seed in the substate.

Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Waterloo East and Waterloo West are in Substate No. 3 with Linn-Mar and Kennedy.
