Cedar Valley girls win first match

The new Cedar Valley Christian/Alburnett girls soccer team defeated Cal-Latimer, 3-1, Friday in the first match in team history.

Destiny Hawkins scored two goals and Elisabeth Fields had the third for the victors. Hawkins and Emma Slagle collected assists.

Cedar Valley Christian and Alburnett are operating a joint squad in Class 1A this year.

Cedar Valley boys fall in Shootout

The Cedar Valley Christian boys soccer team lost to Cal-Latimer, 4-3, in a PK Shootout Friday at home.

The Huskies took a 3-1 lead on goals by Ethan Sperfslage, Brody Hayes and Joey Philipp, but Cal-Latimer tied the game in the second half.

Cal-Latimer won the Shootout, 3-2.

Logan Crittenden and Sperfslage scored for Cedar Valley in the Shootout. Tom Scroggs had two assists in regulation.

Cedar Valley boots Wapello, 7-0

Brody Hayes scored two goals Monday as the Cedar Valley Christian boys soccer team opened the season with a 7-0 victory over Wapello at home.

Joey Philipp, Logan Crittenden, Hunter Washburn, Tom Scroggs and Ethan Sperfslage also scored goals for the Huskies.

Philipp scored in the second minute of the game with an assist from Hunter Washburn to get Cedar Valley rolling in a match that was delayed by lightning.

Colin Heeren made five saves for the shutout in goal.

Sellers, Botkin, Hembera saluted by IGCA

Lela Sellers and Stephanie Botkin of Kennedy have been named second team all-state in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA).

Shelby Hembera of Cedar Valley Christian, who missed half the season with an ankle injury, was named third team all-state in Class 1A. She will play college basketball at Emmaus Bible College.

Sellers, a junior, played guard for the Cougars this season after moving here from Minnesota.

Botkin, a senior forward, has committed to play college basketball at Washington University in St. Louis.

Botkin, Hembera honored by Register

Stephanie Botkin of Kennedy and Shelby Hembera of Cedar Valley Christian have been named to the all-state basketball teams by the Des Moines Register.

Botkin, a 6-foot forward, was named second team all-state in Class 5A. She will play college basketball at Washington University in St. Louis.

Hembera, a 6-foot-1 forward, was named third team all-state in Class 1A. She will play college basketball at the Emmaus Bible College.
