KCC golfers place 4th at Blue Top

RIVERSIDE — The Kirkwood Community College men's golf team finished fourth out of 11 teams at the Blue Top Invitational on Sunday at the Blue Top Ridge Golf & Resort in Riverside.

The Mount Mercy University Blue team won the title with a 36-hole score of 581. AIB placed second at 587, followed by Ashford (590) and Kirkwood (602).

Ryan Schrimper of Mount Mercy and Jonathan LaRue of Ashford shared medalist honors at 2-under-par 142. Jack South of Mount Mercy finished a shot back at 143.

Nathan Chilcott led Kirkwood with a two-day score of 70-76=146.

KCC softball team wins 30th game

The Kirkwood Community College softball team raised its record to 30-5 on Saturday with a pair of victories at the Kirkwood field iin Cedar Rapids.

The 11th-ranked Eagles blanked Mount Mercy, 10-0, and trimmed Indian Hills, 3-1.

Sam Belz (14-4, 1.11 ERA) tossed a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in the victory over Mount Mercy. Shy Saladino (14-0, 0.85 ERA) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in the triumph over Indian Hills.

The Kirkwood pitchers did not walk a batter in either game.

Krysta Tutsch hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Eagles in the first game. Natalie Clark went 2-for-2 with a homer. Chasney Jenkins and Tara Walls were 2-for-3. Brittney Lash drove in two runs.

Walls, Lash and Erin Weno collected RBIs for Kirkwood in the 3-1 victory over Indian Hills.

Rima wins 400th game as Eagles split

Cale Henke pounded the strike zone Saturday and helped the Kirkwood Eagles split an ICCAC doubleheader with Ellsworth at the Kirkwood field in Cedar Rapids.

Henke struck out eight batters and allowed only one earned run as the Eagles topped Ellsworth, 8-2, in the first game of the twinbill.

Ellsworth (11-16, 5-3) took the second game, 6-2.

Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima won the 400th game of his career Saturday. He spent 11 years at NIACC and has been Kirkwood's head coach the past two seasons.

Henke threw 107 pitches in the seven-inning contest and 80 of them were strikes for a strike-to-ball ratio of 74.8 percent.

Angel Merced hit a home run and went 2-for-4 for Kirkwood (12-8, 1-5) in the first game. Sulliam Rios Reyes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Zach Patterson was 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Nick Jones collected two RBIs.

Eric Schenck-Joblinske was 2-for-4 in both games for Kirkwood.

Kirkwood and Ellsworth will play another doubleheader Sunday at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids at 1 p.m.

KCC's Chilcott shares lead at Blue Top

RIVERSIDE —  Nathan Chilcott of Kirkwood Community College fired a 2-under-par 70 Saturday and shares the lead after the first round of the Blue Top Invitational at the Blue Top Ridge Golf and Resort in Riverside.

Chilcott, who is from Wales, is tied with Blake Mitchell of Iowa Wesleyan.

Ashford and Mount Mercy are tied for first place in the team standings at 293. Kirkwood is tied with AIB for third place at 296.

The final round is scheduled for Sunday.

Sweeting tosses 1-hitter for Kirkwood

David Sweeting pitched a one-hit shutout Thursday as the Kirkwood Community College Eagles blanked Marshalltown, 1-0, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Kirkwood's Cedar Rapids campus.

Marshalltown won the second game, 5-0.

Sweeting, a sophomore from the Bahamas, struck out five batters and did not walk anyone in his third straight victory for the Eagles (11-7).

The first game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh and last inning. Shawn Hagarty reached first base on an error, was bunted to second base and scored on an RBI single to right field by Matt Paciello.

Keaton Blackford took the loss in the second game for Kirkwood. He was reached for five runs (three earned) in six innings. The Eagles got only four hits in the game.

Weno shines as No.7 Eagles roll

CRESTON - Erin Weno enjoyed a truly memorable day with the Kirkwood softball team Monday.

Weno went 7-for-7 with two home runs and seven RBIs as the seventh-ranked Eagles swept an ICCAC doubleheader from Southwestern, 15-1 and 13-2, in Creston.

Went was 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBIs in the opener. She went 3-for-3 with another RBI in the second game.

Shy Saladino pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the first game.

Chasney Jenkins went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game. Alicia Crivaro was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sam Belz was the winning pitcher.

Kirkwood raised its records to 28-5 overall and 11-1 in the conference. Southwestern fell to 11-7 overall and 5-6 in the league.

 

 

KCC's Chilcott 4th at Eagle Classic

Nathan Chilcott of Kirkwood fired a 1-under-par 71 Monday and tied for fourth place at the Spring Eagle Classic at Hunters Ridge. Josh Bousman of Black Hawk Community College finished with a 36-hole score of 1-under 143 to claim individual honors.

Jacob Selander of Mount Mercy placed second at 148 and Jamie Booth of Mount Mercy was third at 150. Chilcott finished another stroke back at 151 after shooting an 80 on Sunday.

Tyler Gunderson of Coe tied for seventh with a 9-over 153.

Black Hawk won the title by seven shots over William Jewell. Kirkwood finished third. Coe tied the Kirkwood 'B' team for fourth place.

Black Hawk leads KCC golf tourney

Black Hawk Community College took an 11-stroke lead after the opening round of the Spring Eagle Classic at Hunters Ridge Golf Course Sunday.

Black Hawk stands at 299 entering Monday's final round. Williams Jewell is in second place (310), with the host Kirkwood Eagles third (316) and Coe fourth (322).

Josh Bousman of Black Hawk, Derek Peterson of William Jewell and Jacob Selander of Mount Mercy shared the first-round lead with even-par 72's.

Eagles suffer bad weekend in Boone

BOONE - The Kirkwood baseball team spent a weekend in Boone they would like to quickly forget.
The 19th-ranked Eagles were swept by DMACC in a league doubleheader for the second straight on Sunday, 12-4 and 9-6.
Kirkwood was outscored, 42-13, in the four-game series, dropping its records to 10-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Will Ross was the starting pitcher for Kirkwood in the first game Sunday. He was touched for 13 hits and nine earned runs in six innings.

No. 7 Eagles sweep Ellsworth

Shy Saladino pitched a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts Sunday as the seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles nipped Ellsworth, 2-1, in eight innings in the first game of an ICCAC doubleheader at Kirkwood.

Sam Belz tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Eagles captured the second game, 7-4.

Saladino has a 12-0 record and 0.89 ERA this season. She has struck out 100 batters and walked only 11 in 78.1 innings.

Chasney Jenkins and Brittney Lash went 2-for-3 in the first game for Kirkwood. Lexi Quandt and Erin Weno had RBIs as the Eagles prevailed in extra innings.

Lash went 3-for-4 in the second game for Kirkwood. Alex Finn was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jenkins was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Weno and Natalie Clark also drove in runs for the Eagles.

Kirkwood raised its records to 26-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference. Ellsworth fell to 5-8 overall and 4-6 in the league.
