No. 1 Eagles roll into tourney at 30-0

ESTHERVILLE - Simone Goods scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Saturday as the top-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team rolled by Iowa Lakes, 98-59, in the final game of the regular season.

The Eagles raised their records to 30-0 overall and 12-0 in the ICCAC conference.

Coach Kim Muhl has won six national titles at Kirkwood, but this is  the first time the Eagles have ever finished the regular season with an undefeated record.

Kirkwood will host Ellsworth in the quarterfinals of the regional  tournament Tuesday at 5:30. The Kirkwood men will face NIACC in the second game Tuesday at 7:30 in their regional tournament.

Megan Axcell scored 15 points Saturday and Olivia Usher had 14.  Deleyah Harris provided 11 points and seven rebounds. TiRayah Cotton scored 10 points.

No. 12 Kirkwood men fall at Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE - The 12th-ranked Kirkwood men's basketball team suffered  its worst loss of the season Saturday with a 101-73 setback at Iowa  Lakes.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 23-6 overall and 9-3 in the ICCAC conference.

Kirkwood drew the No. 2 seed for the regional tournament and will host  NIACC in the opening round Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Chris King led the Eagles Saturday with 25 points. Miles Wentzien scored 14.

Kyle Beisch scored 22 points and Dennis Joiner had 20 for Iowa Lakes (21-8, 8-4).

Kirkwood baseball team sweeps twinbill

GODFREY, Ill. - The Kirkwood baseball team swept a doubleheader from  Lewis & Clark Community College, 12-8 and 9-0, Saturday in Godfrey, Ill.

General McArthur, Tyler Bordner and Toran Shahidi belted home runs for  the Eagles (3-3) in the first game. Bordner was 3-for-4 with three  RBIs, McArthur was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Shahidi drove in two  runs.

Starting pitcher Austin Miller tossed four strong innings for Kirkwood  in the opener for the victory. He allowed one run on five hits, with  six strikeouts and no walks.

Shahidi drove in three more runs in the nightcap. Korry Howell was  3-for-4 while McArthur, Colin Kreiter and Bordner all had two hits.  Kreiter scored three times.

Peyton Long pitched a three-hit shutout for Kirkwood in the second  game, which was stopped after five innings due to darkness. Long  allowed only three hits, with five strikeouts and two walks.

McBeain stars for No. 4 KCC softball

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Angie McBeain starred for the fourth-ranked Kirkwood  softball team Saturday night as a hitter and pitcher.

McBeain hit a two-run walk-off homer in the botton of the seventh  inning to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Eagles a 4-2 victory over South  Suburban in the first game of the N4C Dome Jamboree.

McBeain then pitched a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as  Kirkwood belted Moraine Valley Community College, 16-0.

Kirkwood trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh against  South Suburban. Taylor Nearad led off with a double and Lexi Ferrari  beat out a bunt single to get things started.

Nearad scored on an infield grounder by Maddie Hansen, then McBeain  delivered her two-run homer to win the game. Nearad and Hansen, a pair  of 2016 All-Americans, had two hits for Kirkwood against South Suburban.

Kirkwood pitcher Lexi Kinnaird struck out 15 batters and allowed only  one hit against South Suburban. Both of South Suburban's runs were  unearned.

DoniRay Mayhew belted two home runs for the Eagles against Moraine  Valley and Nearad hit her first homer of the season. Morgan Frost,  another 2016 All-American, went 4-for-4, scored four times and drove  in two runs.

Mayhew was 3-for-4 with her two homers and six RBIs. Nearad was  3-for-3 and scored three times. Hansen had three hits. Ferrari and  Audra Bridenstine had two hits. McBeain and Monika Bevans had two RBIs.

Kirkwood (8-0) is scheduled for a doubleheader Sunday against McHenry.

Harris helps No. 1 Eagles clinch title

Except for her bout with bronchitis, Kirkwood sophomore Deleyah Harris had a pretty good day Wednesday.

Harris nearly recorded a triple-double as the top-ranked Eagles held off NIACC, 93-81, to clinch the outright conference title and run  their perfect record to 29-0.

On top of that, the 5-foot-9 guard picked up a Division I college scholarship offer after the game from Missouri-Kansas City head coach Marsha Freese, a Cedar Rapids native who was at Johnson Hall.

Harris was happy to receive her first offer from a D-I school, especially one that's close to her home in Omaha, but she was not  ready to commit on the spot.

Her commitment right now is to getting healthy and trying to help Kirkwood win the NJCAA Division II national title.

Harris finished with 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in 32 minutes of action. She used an inhaler several times to help her breathing while battling bronchitis, but managed to keep going.

"My adrenaline was running," she said. "I was tired, but I had to keep going."

Wentzien nets 28 as Eagles top NIACC

Kirkwood sophomore Miles Wentzien is a grown man with muscles upon muscles, but nobody makes it through a college basketball season without a few bumps and bruises.

Wentzien missed two games last month after injuring his collarbone and  sternum in a game against Ellsworth, but he's relatively healthy now  and ready for the stretch run.

Wentzien tossed in 28 points and grabbed six rebounds Wednesday night  as the 12th-ranked Eagles pulled away from NIACC, 81-63, in a  conference game at Johnson Hall.

Wentzien was hit in the jaw by an errant elbow Wednesday and needed a  few moments to shake it off, but otherwise said he feels good as the  season has moved into March.

"I felt pretty close to 100 percent out there tonight," he said. "I'd  say 95 to 100 percent."

That's good news for Kirkwood, which will need all of its players in  good health as they try to win a second national title in a row.

Kaliph Fagan, a key member of the bench brigade, did not play against  NIACC after turning his ankle in practice Tuesday, but he plans to  play Saturday in the final game of the regular season at Iowa Lakes.

KCC baseball splits with Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood baseball team split a doubleheader with Johnson County Community College Sunday in Kansas.

The Eagles won the first game, 5-4, with the game-winning run scoring  on a balk in the top of the seventh.

Johnson County took the nightcap, 8-6, despite home runs by Cal Clark and Lorenzo Elion.

Kirkwood (1-3) took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning of the opener, but Johnson County scored four times in the bottom of the  sixth to tie the game.

The Eagles broke the tie in the top of the seventh and Kaden Wadle retired Johnson County in the bottom of the seventh to secure the  victory.

Hunter Lee pitched five strong innings for Kirkwood in the opener. He struck out eight batters and did not allow any runs. Wadle got the  victory in relief.

Spencer Wiskus went 2-for-3 and scored two runs for the Eagles. Tyler Bordner was 2-for-4.

Kirkwood trailed 8-4 heading into the seventh inning in the second game. The Eagles scored twice in the seventh and had the bases loaded, but the rally ended there.

Elion was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in the second game. Wiskus  collected two RBIs. Korry Howell had two hits and General McArthur scored two runs.

Johnson County swept a doubleheader from Kirkwood on Saturday and won the series, 3-1.

KCC baseball nipped twice in opener

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood Community College baseball team  dropped a pair of one-run decisions in the season opener to Johnson  County Community College Saturday.

Kirkwood lost the first game, 6-5, and dropped the nightcap, 10-9, in  12 innings.

The Eagles (0-2) fell behind 6-1 after three innings of the opener,  but they scored twice in the fifth inning and twice in the sixth  inning to make it close.

Spencer Wiskus went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Eagles in the first  game and hit a home run.

Kirkwood took a 9-8 lead in the top of the 10th inning in the second  game, but Johnson County (8-2) scored in the bottom of the 10th to  stay alive and scored again in the 12th to win it.

Korry Howell went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for the  Eagles in the nightcap. Colin Kreiter also went 2-for-5. Tyler Bordner  belted a home run and drove in three runs. Wiskus scored three times.

Kirkwood and Johnson County are scheduled for another twinbill Sunday.

No. 1 Kirkwood women clinch ICCAC title

FORT DODGE - The top-ranked Kirkwood women's basketball team clinched  at least a tie for the ICCAC conference title Saturday with a 78-47  victory over Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.

The Eagles secured the No. 1 seed for the regional tournament and  raised their records to 28-0 overall and 12-0 in the league.

Shaneequah Watkins made all four of her 3-pointers and led a balanced  attack with 17 points. Deleyah Harris scored 16 points, Simone Goods  had 14 and Tay Tay Wilson 13.

Goods was named the national NJCAA Division II Player of the Week for  her performances in two victories last week.
