Richards named volleyball All-American

Madsy Richards of Kirkwood has been named a first team All-American by  the NJCAA Division II volleyball committee.

Richards, a Xavier grad, led Kirkwood with 426 kills and 54 aces this  season. She also ranked fourth on the squad with 374 digs.

Richards, a sophomore, was named the ICCAC conference player of the  year and helped the Eagles finish seventh at the national tournament.

Alex Miner, a sophomore from Gilbert, received Honorable Mention on  the All-America team. Miner finished with 148 blocks and 360 kills for  Kirkwood.

No. 1 Eagles hold off Illinois Central

Miles Wentzien scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds Saturday  afternoon as the top-ranked Kirkwood Eagles trimmed Illinois Central, 76-69, in a men's basketball game at Johnson Hall.

The game was tied, 63-63, with less than four minutes remaining, but  the Eagles marched to the foul line and made 13 of 14 free throws in  the last 3 minutes, 15 seconds to secure the victory.

Kirkwood was hot at the charity stripe all day, sinking 39 of 46 free  throws for 84.8 percent. The Eagles made only 14 field goals in the ballgame and made only five two-point shots, but they won the game  with a 39-19 bulge in free throws.

Wentzien and Kaliph Fagan shot 9-for-10 at the foul line, Harp was  7-for-8 and Chris King was 6-for-6. Harp snapped the 63-63 tie with a pair of free throws and Fagan followed with a pair to make it 67-63.

Fagan finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Harp had 12 points  and four assists. Da'Rion King contributed eight points and nine rebounds. Chris King had nine points and three assists.

There were nine ties in the ballgame and 12 lead changes. Neither team  led by double digits.

No. 1 Kirkwood men top John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. - Kaliph Fagan and Da'Rion King led a balanced attack with 13 points apiece Wednesday night as the top-ranked Kirkwood Eagles defeated John Wood College, 77-59.

Carlo Marble contributed 10 points for Kirkwood, which raised its record to 6-2. Byron Harp and Miles Wentzien grabbed six rebounds. Chris King had four assists.

Larry Plummer scored 12 points for John Wood (4-5).

Muhl collects 800th victory with Kirkwood women

QUINCY, Ill. - Kim Muhl was inducted into the NJCAA Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011 after winning six national titles, but he's still rolling up the victories at Kirkwood Community College.

Muhl collected his 800th victory Wednesday night as the seventh-ranked Eagles bounced John Wood College, 85-59, in Quincy, Ill.

Wood has compiled an 800-174 record in 28 years at Kirkwood with 23 trips to the regional finals, 16 berths in the national tournament and 22 straight 20-win campaigns.

Deleyah Harris led Kirkwood Wednesday night with 20 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and one assist. Olivia Usher popped in 13 points, Megan Axcell had 11 points and Tay Tay Wilson added 10. Simone Goods had nine rebounds.

Kirkwood raised its perfect record to 8-0. John Wood fell to 1-7.

No. 1 Eagles push Indian Hills to limit

Kirkwood guard Byron Harp bent over and put his hands on his knees with two minutes left in Tuesday night's game against Indian Hills at Johnson Hall to grab a quick 10-second breather after a whistle had stopped the frenetic action.

It was just about the only breather the slender point guard got all night.

Harp played all 40 minutes against one of the most talented junior college teams in the Midwest, but his efforts were not quite good enough as the Eagles lost to Indian Hills 67-63 in an entertaining game.

"I feel fine. I can play that much," Harp said after collecting 17 points and seven assists. "I don't actually want to, necessarily, but I had to.

"Coach trusted me, so I appreciate that, but I feel fine," he said. "We've got a nice three-day break coming, so I'll be fine."

Chris King normally shares the load with Harp at point guard, but Coach Bryan Petersen elected not to use King in the ballgame so Harp played from the opening tip to the final horn.

"Asking him to play 40 minutes against Indian Hills, that's a lot," said Petersen. "We were trying to find different times to get him out of the game, but he's playing well and he's the guy we trust out there as our point guard.

No. 7 KCC women raise mark to 7-0

Simone Goods scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds Tuesday night as the seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles raised their record to 7-0 with an 88-53 victory over South Australia at Johnson Hall.

Deleyah Harris and Shaneeuah Watkins scored 11 points apiece for Kirkwood.

L-M's Kerr commits to Kirkwood baseball

Linn-Mar senior Kirby Kerr has committed to play baseball at Kirkwood Community College.

Kerr made the news known Monday on his Twitter account declaring: "I am excited to announce that I am going to continue my academic and baseball career next year at Kirkwood Community College."

An honorable mention all-MVC selection last summer, the outfielder/pitcher, batted .344 with five doubles, three triples and 20 runs batted in. In the outfield, he commited just one error in 48 chances. On the mound, he led the Lions with a 5-0 record and a 2.24 earned run average, 22 strikeouts and nine walks in 25 innings.

Kerr was also a two-year starter for the Lion football team and is a member of the basketball team.

KCC volleyball takes 7th at nationals

CHARLESTOWN, W.Va. - The Kirkwood women's volleyball team swept Coffeyville Saturday to finish seventh at the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the second straight year.

The Eagles whipped Coffeyville in straight sets, 25-12, 25-19, 27-25, to finish the season with a 34-10 record. The Eagles compiled a 2-2 record at the national tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Alex Miner led Kirkwood with 12 kills. Morgan Grimm had eight kills, Erica Armstrong seven, Margaret Micka five, Caiti Peterson five and Riley Longden four. Peterson had 31 assists.

Jenna Laxton led the Eagles with 15 digs. Miner had seven blocks.

Kirkwood played the tournament without Madsy Richards, the MVP of the ICCAC conference this season who suffered a knee injury at the regional tournament.

Wentzien paces No. 1 Eagles by Mustangs

Miles Wentzien popped in five 3-pointers and scored 20 points Saturday night as the top-ranked Kirkwood Eagles defeated the Mount Mercy junior varsity, 104-78, at Johnson Hall.

Wentzien also collected six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Eagles (5-1).

Da'Rion King finished with a double-double for Kirkwood with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Byron Harp contributed with 12 points and nine assists.

Ethan Meeker hit all four of his 3-pointers and scored 14 points for the Eagles and Kaliph Fagan had 11 points.

Tanner Frazier made five 3-pointers and led Mount Mercy with 21 points. Adam Van Oort scored 13 points, Dimarco Mallett 12 and Brady Stauffer 10.
