Eagles ride 41-game streak into playoffs

Some college softball teams have powerful hitters. Some have dominant pitchers. Others play air-tight defense.

The third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles have it all, which is why they've enjoyed a terrific regular season and are looking forward to the playoffs and a possible trip to the national tournament.

Kirkwood (48-3) will ride a 41-game winning streak into the NJCAA Division II Region XI tournament that is scheduled to begin Sunday in Fort Dodge.

KCC's Gonzalez earns national honor

Kirkwood third baseman Jairo Gonzalez has been named the NJCAA Division II National Player of the Week for his performances in eight baseball games last week.

Gonzalez, a sophomore from Florida, hit .517 with six home runs and 19 RBIs for the Eagles last week. He went 15-for-29 at the plate and scored 14 runs.

Gonzalez was named the ICCAC Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Gonzalez has a chance to win the Triple Crown in the ICCAC this season. He ranks first in the league in home runs (8), first in RBIs (44) and second in batting average (.413).

Regional softball tourney delayed to Sunday

The NJCAA Region XI softball tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday in Fort Dodge, has been postponed until Sunday due to an unfavorable weather forecast that includes the possibility of 3 to 5 inches of snow.

The Kirkwood Eagles are seeded No.1 in the eight-tournament tournament and are scheduled to face No.8 seed Iowa Central on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The tournament is supposed to be a double-elimination event that would last several days, but could be modified due to weather conditions.

Eagles finish ICCAC race at 28-0

BOONE - The third-ranked Kirkwood softball team finished with a perfect record in the ICCAC Tuesday by sweeping a doubleheader from No.6 DMACC, 3-1 and 8-2, in Boone.

The Eagles ended the conference season with a glittering 28-0 record. DMACC finished in second place with a 22-6 mark, losing all four of its games to the champions.

Kirkwood (48-3) has not lost since falling to Central Methodist University, 4-3, on March 18. The Eagles left the field that day with a 7-3 record and have won 41 straight since then, setting a school record for consecutive victories.

Gonzalez swings hot bat for Kirkwood

Dairo Gonzalez did not speak a word of English when he moved from Cuba to Florida with his family when he was 14 years old, but he could sure swing a baseball bat.

He speaks English very well now. And he can still swing that bat.

Gonzalez, now 19 and a sophomore a Kirkwood Community College, went on a rampage last week when he went 17 for 30 with six homers and 18 RBIs to help the Eagles (27-13) get on the winning path again.

He's been named the ICCAC Player of the Week for his exploits as he warmed up with the favorable weather.
