Feisty Kirkwood men knock off DMACC

Kirkwood guard Kasey Semler left Johnson Hall with a sore hand, sore toe, sore groin and a smile Thursday night.

"I'll go get some ice in a minute," he said dismissively, gladly trading a few aches and pains for a key victory.

Semler contributed 10 points, six assists and the right attitude as the Eagles defeated DMACC, 74-60, in an ICCAC conference game.

Hobbs helps Kirkwood women top DMACC

The dysfunctional Kirkwood women's basketball team won another game Thursday night.

Coach Kim Muhl uses that word all the time to describe his team. He gets no argument from his players.

"Dysfunctional is us," freshman guard Lexi Hobbs said humorously with a smile. "We are VERY dysfunctional. It works, though."

The third-ranked Eagles topped No.15 DMACC, 60-53, at Johnson Hall for their 13th straight victory despite committing 20 turnovers, shooting 55 percent at the foul line and getting beaten on the backboards.

Muhl found a home at Kirkwood - and 700 wins

Kim Muhl wasn't sure what he wanted to do as a young man.

He spent three years in the Army, then enrolled in college but left William Penn University during his senior year without a degree. Looking for an adventure, he moved to California with an Army buddy.

"I painted and steam-cleaned apartments and made more money than you can imagine," he said about his trip to the West Coast. "Just had a blast."

It took a few more years, but Muhl eventually found a home at Kirkwood Community College and found his calling as one of the most successful women's basketball coaches in the nation.

He added to his glittering list of accomplishments Saturday when the Eagles traveled to Creston and drubbed Southwestern Community College, 99-40, for the 700th victory of his career.

No.3 Eagles bomb Southeastern

The third-ranked Kirkwood women pulled away from Southeastern in the last eight minutes of the first half with an 18-7 run, then bombed the Blackhawks with six 3-point baskets in the first five minutes of the second half to take care of business in a 72-51 win Wednesday night at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood (18-3, 7-0) was led by Kianna Jacobs, who took the ball to the basket aggressively in the first half.

The second half featured a 3-point shooting clinic by Bianca Dufelmeier and Lexi Fitzpatrick, who each hit three in the space of five minutes.
