Kirkwood women ranked 3rd in NJCAA poll

The Kirkwood Eagles climbed one notch from No.4 to No.3 in the NJCAA Division II national rankings on Wednesday.

The Eagles (17-3, 6-0) host Southeastern Community College (13-6, 4-2) at Johnson Hall Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Louisburg (13-1) is ranked No.1 this week.

Jacobs paces No.4 Kirkwood women

ESTHERVILLE - Kianna Jacobs scored 15 points Saturday afternoon as fourth-ranked Kirkwood trimmed Iowa Lakes, 58-54, in a women's junior college ballgame in Estherville.

Whitney Henderson contributed 11 points for the Eagles (17-3, 6-0). Bianca Dufelmeier collected seven points and eight assists. Friday Chuol had six points and six rebounds.

Myangel Johnson led Iowa Lakes (7-14, 3-4) with 14 points.

Kirkwood men nipped by Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE - Kelly Madison scored 20 points Saturday afternoon as 10th-ranked Iowa Lakes edged Kirkwood, 57-55, in a men's junior college basketball game in Estherville.

Taylor Olson made four 3-pointers and led Kirkwood with 16 points. Kasey Semler hit three triples and scored 11 points for the Eagles (11-9, 3-2).

Kirkwood outscored Iowa Lakes from the field, 50-45, but the Lakers outscored the Eagles 12-5 at the foul line to spell the difference in the game.

Deondre Parks contributed 10 points for Iowa Lakes (12-4, 5-1). Madison made five 3-pointers for the Lakers.

Hunter, Manego spark Kirkwood men

The Kirkwood men's basketball team has a little ritual in the locker room after games.

Once the coaches are done talking, the players are given a chance to say something about the team. Wednesday night, sophomore Devan Douglas wanted to say a few words about the way Kevin Hunter and Sean Manego played against Iowa Central.

"He just wanted to congratulate us, to keep our confidence up," said Manego, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Cape Coral, Fla.

Hunter muscled in 14 points and Manego canned 11 to help the Eagles dispense with Iowa Central, 68-57, in an ICCAC game at Johnson Hall.

No.4 Kirkwood women roll after slow start

The players on the Kirkwood women's basketball team respect Coach Kim Muhl and like him a lot, but sometimes it seems like they play poorly just to torment him a little.

"Well, may-be," joked sophomore Kianna Jacobs, smiling mischievously at the suggestion. "He does get a little crazy at times."

The Eagles played miserably for the first 10 minutes against Iowa Central Wednesday night at Johnson Hall. They fired air-balls, passed the ball into the stands and generally messed up.
