Stewart recalls stress of 2013 draft

The 2014 Major League Baseball draft begins Thursday and hundreds of high school and college ballplayers are counting the hours before the Houston Astros go on the clock with the first pick.

One year ago, Kohl Stewart was an 18-year-old pitcher anxiously awaiting the draft. Stewart was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the fourth overall pick of the first round and is a couple of months into his first full year of professional baseball.

Stewart has vivid memories of the 2013 draft and the days leading up to it.

3 Kernels make MWL all-star team

The Midwest League has announced the rosters for the 50th MWL Summer All-Star Classic, scheduled for June 17 for Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.

The All-Stars were nominated and selected by the field managers of the 16 league teams.

Three Kernels were selected as reserves: Bryan Harr was selected as a reserve infielder and Kohl Stewart and Yorman Landa were selected as pitchers.

No team from either division had more than two starters. South Bend had the most players selected with six (two starters, four reserves) while Peoria (one starter, four reserves) and Wisconsin (two starters, three reserves) each had five from the West.

Quad Cities will provide the coaching staff for the MWL West team and the West Michigan field staff will coach the MWL East team

Kernels cut 2 pitchers after loss

Cedar Rapids Kernels Manager Jake Mauer thought pitching would be the strength of his ballclub this season, but it has not turned out that way.

The Kernels rank 14th out of 16 teams in the Midwest League in earned run average, a prime reason the club is languishing with a 27-31 record and near the bottom of the standings.

The Kernels lost to Burlington, 6-4, before 3,003 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium Monday afternoon, and after the game Mauer told pitchers Derrick Penilla and Felix Jorge they are being shipped back to Extended Spring Training in Florida.

Penilla (1-2) was the starting pitcher in Monday's game and allowed 10 hits, three home runs and six runs in five innings, putting his ERA at 5.64.

Jorge did not pitch Monday, but he's struggled with a 2-5 record and 9.00 ERA in 12 games.

Mauer said the Minnesota Twins will send two new starting pitchers, but was not sure who they will be or when they will arrive.

Christensen lifts Kernels with homer

Minnesota Twins General Manager Terry Ryan planned to keep a close eye on Chad Christensen during his visit to Cedar Rapids this week to watch the Kernels.

Ryan liked what he saw Sunday afternoon.

Christensen belted a 410-foot home run to center field to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and give the Kernels a 4-3 victory over Burlington before 2,576 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Christensen, the Cedar Rapids native who returned home to enhance his pro career, is hitting a solid .289 with four home runs and 23 games while helping the Kernels as a first baseman and outfielder.

The Twins grabbed Christensen, 23, in the 25th round of the 2013 draft following his all-Big Ten career at the University of Nebraska, where he played the infield and outfield.

Williams goes on DL; Murphy joins Kernels

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announced Sunday that outfielder John Murphy has joined the Kernels from Fort Myers in the Florida State League and that J.D. Williams has been placed on the 7-day disabled list.

Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the moves.

The Twins selected Murphy in the 19th round of the 2012 draft from Jacksonville University. He split time last season between Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers, batting .272 in 56 games for the Kernels with two homers, 22 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

He began this season at Fort Myers and in 21 games was batting .197 with three doubles and eight RBIs.

Williams goes on the DL with right patellar tendinitis. In 24 games for the Kernels this season, he was batting .233 with six doubles and 10 RBIs.

Kernels doomed by their own mistakes

The 3,329 fans that attended “Wedding Crasher Night" at Veterans Memorial Stadium heard both bride and groom say “I do” during a pre-game wedding ceremony, but in the end the happy couple may have been just about the only people on the field Saturday that did not strike out.

The Kernels and visiting Burlington Bees combined to fan 25 times as the Bees withstood a late Cedar Rapids rally to edge the home team, 7-6.

In a precursor of what was to come on the night, Kernels losing pitcher Josue Montanez (1-3) struck out the side in the first inning, but those three strikeouts were scattered among two Bees hits and two Kernels infield errors, all of which resulted in three unearned runs for the visitors before the home team got to pick up a bat.

The Kernels pulled within 3-2 with a pair of runs in their half of the third inning.

With Joel Licon on third base and Engelb Vielma on first, Bees pitcher Ryan Etsell threw to first in an attempt to pick off Vielma. Vielma broke for second base and while the Bees had him in a rundown, Licon broke for home and scored. Vielma got back safely to first base.

Vielma advanced to second on Chad Christensen’s subsequent walk and scored the second Kernels run on Mitch Garver’s RBI single.

Montanez was victimized for another unearned run in the fourth inning when Bees outfielder Ranyelmy Mendoza reached on another Kernels error to lead off the inning and later came around to score the Bees’ fourth run.

Montanez took personal responsibility for recording nine of the 12 Bees outs during his four innings of work, striking out a season-high seven batters and fielding a pair of comeback grounders for outs as well.

It’s a good thing, too, because a lot of baseballs were bouncing off his fielders’ gloves. The Kernels committed three errors, all leading to runs, and had a number of other balls ricocheting off the gloves of diving defenders.

Kernels Manager Jake Mauer was understandably disappointed with his club’s performance.

“We don’t catch the ball at first base, don’t catch a ball in the outfield, don’t catch the ball at third base,” lamented Mauer.

“Now, all of a sudden you’ve thrown 90 pitches through four (innings). Not too good.

“It didn’t have to be that. We catch the ball and make routine plays, he (Montanez) doesn’t have to exit in the fourth. It just messes everything up.”

Burlington added three runs off Kernels reliever Alex Muren to stretch its lead to 7-2 through six innings.

The Cedar Rapids bats finally woke up late in the game and Bryan Haar struck the big blow for the Kernels with a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning. Haar then scored on a Jason Kanzler single to pull the Kernels within 7-6.

In total, Kernels pitchers Montanez, Muren and Felix Jorge recorded 12 strikeouts, but gave up four extra base hits to go with the three Kernels fielding errors.

Vielma and Christensen each had a pair of hits and were the only Kernels hitters with more than one.

Cedar Rapids and Burlington continue the series Sunday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a game scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

Kernels falter against Timber Rattlers

Going into Thursday night’s game with Wisconsin, the Cedar Rapids Kernels were a perfect 16-0 this season when they led a game after six innings.

So things were looking pretty good for the Kernels and the 2,099 fans that showed up at Veterans Memorial Stadium after Michael Quesada’s sixth-inning double drove in two runs to give the Kernels a 5-3 lead.

But the game turned sour in a hurry for the Kernels in the seventh as the Timber Rattlers sent 10 hitters to the plate and five of them scored before the inning was over. The big inning wrapped up the scoring for both teams and the Kernels fell, 8-5.

Adding injury to insult, Kernels outfielder J.D. Williams left the game with a twisted knee suffered going after Steven Holcomb’s two-run double during the long seventh inning. Kernels Manager Jake Mauer said Williams will see a doctor Friday and is expected to be out of the lineup a few days.

Slegers gets back in groove for Kernels

Cedar Rapids Kernels pitcher Aaron Slegers was not happy with himself after he was torched by the Quad Cities River Bandits in his last outing May 22.

The 6-foot-10 right-hander from Arizona felt a lot better Wednesday night after a strong performance against Wisconsin in a 5-2 victory before 1,143 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Slegers allowed only three hits and one run in six innings as the Kernels (25-28) won their second game in a row.

Slegers gave up 10 runs on 14 hits in just three innings against the River Bandits six days ago in a forgettable game. He looked like a different guy Wednesday, raising his record to 5-2 and dropping his ERA to 4.95.

Kernels lose despite 3 homers

BELOIT, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels lost to the Beloit Snappers, 6-5, Monday afternoon at Pohlman Field despite hitting three home runs.

All of the Kernels' offense came from the three long-balls, which were the most in a single game for the Kernels this year.

Cedar Rapids hit back-to-back homers for the first time this season when Chad Christensen and Mitch Garver connected in the eighth inning. Bryan Haar hit his team-high eighth home run, sending one over the wall for the second consecutive game.

However, it was a four-run third inning for Beloit that proved to be the difference. The Snappers took a 4-0 lead in the third when Luis Baez hit a sacrifice fly and B.J. Boyd drilled a three-run home run to right-center.

It was Boyd's fourth home run of the season.
