Harrington, Hobbs honored by IIAC

Ryan Harrington and Aleena Hobbs of Coe College have been named Athletes of the Week by the Iowa Conference.

Harrington, a sophomore from Chester, N.J., won the 174-pound title at the Simpson Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. He went 4-0 in the tournament and captured three of his bouts with bonus points.

Hobbs, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids Washington, had a double-double in both games for the Coe women's basketball team last week. She collected 24 points and 10 rebounds against Carthage, then had 24 points and 10 rebounds again in a contest against Wisconsin-Whitewater. She shot 7-for-11 on 3-pointers in the two games.

This is the second time this season that Hobbs has been honored as the Female Athlete of the Week in the IIAC. She was previously named on Nov. 23.

 

 

Coe men rally for OT victory

CHICAGO - Marshall Shedeck's jump shot with 1:13 remaining in overtime gave Coe the lead for good as the Kohawks rallied for an 89-85 victory Sunday over Illinois Tech at the Keating Sports Center.

The Kohawks (5-3) trailed 40-36 at halftime. They forced overtime when Jacob Timm connected on a jump shot with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Illinois Tech's Anthony Mosley, Jr. had a chance to win it, but his jumper with six seconds left was off the mark.

After Shedeck gave the Kohawks the lead in the extra session, his two free throws with three seconds left sealed the win.

Matt Meyer led a balanced Coe offense with 18 points. Timm added 15 and Shedeck finished with 14. Matt Vonderhaar chipped in with 13 while Spencer Williams had a solid game off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds. Timm led Coe in rebounds from his point guard position with eight.

Mosley had a game-high 23 points to lead Illinois Tech (1-8).

Harrington wins title for Kohawks

INDIANOLA - Ryan Harrington of Coe won the 174-pound title at the Simpson Invitational wrestling tournament in Indianola Saturday.

Harrington defeated Vicente Guerrero of Graceland, 8-0, in the finals.

Jake Voss (157) and Josh Allen (184) placed second for the Kohawks. Mike Gussarson (133) finished third.

Coe women fall to No.15 Whitewater

The Coe women's basketball team lost to No. 15 Wisconsin-Whitewater, 73-61, in a non-conference game at Eby Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.

Aleena Hobbs poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Kohawks (5-2). Jenna Lehman scored 15 points and Mickey Hansche finished with 10 points despite missing all eight of her 3-point shots.

Andrea Meinert scored 18 points for Wisconsin-Whitewater, which raised its perfect record to 7-0.

Coe men tie mark in 92-90 loss

CHICAGO - The Coe men's basketball team tied a school record with fifteen 3-pointers Saturday, but the Kohawks needed a 16th triple at the buzzer to collect the victory.

They didn't get it.

Coe lost a shootout in Chicago to North Park, 92-90, despite all those 3-pointers.

Matt Vondehaar misfired on a 3-pointer at the buzzer that could have won the game for the Kohawks (4-3).

Lincoln Vorba made five 3-pointers and led Coe with 19 points. He gave the Kohawks a 90-87 lead with 1:42 remaining, but North Park (4-2) scored the last five points of the game.
