Sewera takes title at Luther Open

DECORAH - Farai Sewera of Coe captured the 165-pound title at the Luther Open wrestling tournament Saturday in Decorah.

Sewera won five straight matches and defeated Douglas Perrin of Upper Iowa with a major 15-4 decision in the finals. Sewera collected a pin, a technical fall, another pin and another major decision on his way to the crown.

Ryan Harrington of Coe placed second at 174 pounds. Jan Rosenberg finished third at 125, Mike Gussarson was fifth at 133, Josh Donkle finished fifth at 149 and Andrew Holladay was sixth at 197.

No team scores were kept.

 

Coe swimmers set 3 school records

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Coe swimming teams broke three school records in a double-dual meet at Franklin College Saturday.

Ayaka Okamoto set a school in the women's 200 backstroke in 2:08.20. Corbin Faidley set a record in the men's 1650 freestyle in 16:54.55, and the quartet of Ossama Abu-Halawa, Andrew Koehler, Justin Sauter and Nathan Dvorak broke the school mark in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.68.

The Coe women topped Millikin, 116-77, and lost to Franklin, 144-81. The Coe men dunked Milliken, 146-36, and lost to Franklin, 147-87.

The Coe women got victories from Okamoto, Sam Fitzgerald (400 IM), Kendallyn Recker (diving) and the 400 medley relay.

The Coe men got victories from Faidley, Brian Bosn (100 free), Tucker Dangremond (200 breast) and the 200 freestyle relay.

 

Coe swimmers sweep Tabor, Simpson

INDIANOLA – The Coe men’s and women’s swimming teams earned a pair of wins Friday at Simpson College.

The Coe men beat Tabor, 154-38, and Simpson, 138-84. The Coe women beat Tabor, 115-63, and Simpson, 110-92.

On the men’s side, the Kohawks won the 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 43 seconds) and 200 freestyle relay (1:35.27), Andy Cheng won the 1,000 freestyle (11:09.37) and 100 butterfly (55.60), Corbin Faidley won the 200 freestyle (1:49.41) and 100 freestyle (50.65), Collin Flynn won the 200 individual medley (2:02.87) and 100 backstroke (54.84), and Brian Bosn won the 500 freestyle (5:16.21).

Coe's Harbaugh, Smith honored by AVCA

Coe volleyball players Mackenzie Harbaugh and Brianna Smith have been named to the All-Central Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Harbaugh was named first team all-region for the second straight year. She joins Shayla Chalker (2007-2008) as the only two-time first team selections in school history.

Smith received honorable mention on the all-region team.

Coe finished the season with a 23-13 record.

 

5 Kohawks made IIAC soccer team

Five members of the Coe women's soccer team have been named to the Iowa Conference all-star squad.

Sarah Fathallah, a Linn-Mar grad, was named first team all-conference for the second straight year. Jordan Holmes, a Kennedy grad, and Allie Stubbs were named to the second team.

Kelsey Fauser and MJ Winterer of Coe received honorable mention.

Coe reached the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament and set a school record with 15 victories this season. The Kohawks climbed to No. 16 in the national rankings, their highest spot in school history.
