Coe College - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Kohawks clubbed by No.24 Dubuque

Coe College will finish the 2015 season with a losing record.

That unhappy outcome was determined Saturday when the Kohawks fell to 24th-ranked Dubuque, 37-21, in an Iowa Conference game before 2,783 fans at Clark Field.

Coe fell to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference heading into the season finale next Saturday at Buena Vista. This will be Coe's first losing season since 2008, which was Steve Staker's first year as head coach.

Staker has compiled a 54-29 record in eight seasons with the Kohawks.

3 Kohawks honored in volleyball

Mackenzie Harbaugh, Brianna Smith and Olivia Leisinger of Coe have been selected to the 2015 Iowa Conference all-star volleyball squad.

Harbaugh and Smith were named to the 15-player first team. Leisinger received honorable mention.

The Kohawks reached the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament before falling to Wartburg Thursday night.

Coe volleyball falls in semifinals

WAVERLY - The Coe women's volleyball team lost to Wartburg, 25-18, 28-26, 25-21, in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament Thursday night in Waverly.

Brianna Smith and Lauren Himan led the Kohawks with seven kills. Lindsey Koch and Olivia Leisinger had six kills.

Mackenzie Harbaugh collected 30 assists for Coe. Madi Miller had 17 digs.

Coe finished the season with a 23-13 record.

No. 16 Coe women ousted by Loras

Coe senior Sarah Fathallah left Clark Field for the final time Wednesday evening with a heavy heart and a lump the size of a walnut near her right eye.

Fathallah was hurt with about 14 1/2 minutes left in the second half and never returned to action as the 16th-ranked Kohawks lost to Loras College, 1-1 in a PK Shootout, in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference tournament on the Coe campus.

The Kohawks struggled on offense much of the day and it didn't help when Fathallah, one of their leading scorers, was hit in the head by an opponent's elbow and knocked dizzy. But Fathallah, a former Linn-Mar star, was more bothered by the loss than she was by her nasty-looking injury.

Fathallah was one of the cornerstones as the Kohawks rose from relative obscurity to national prominence this year, and suddenly the season and her career were over after Loras nipped them 3-2 in the Shootout.

"I'm only heartbroken because I wish I had four more years of this, watching the team build and grow and just learn so much," she said. "It's honestly been one of the greatest honors I've been a part of."
