Coe women take 6th at Grinnell swim

GRINNELL - The Coe women's swimming team finished sixth out of 13 teams at the Grinnell Invitational Saturday.

Sam Fitzgerald placed third for the Coe women Saturday in the 100 breaststroke.

The Coe men placed seventh out of eight teams.

Harrington, Rosenberg lead Coe matmen

Ryan Harrington and Jan Rosenberg both went 3-0 Saturday for the 14th-ranked Coe wrestling team in Iowa Conference duals at Eby Fieldhouse.

Harrington, ranked No. 1 at 174, collected two technical falls and a pin. Rosenberg had two pins and a regular decision.

Coe defeated Loras and Simpson, but lost to 12th-ranked Luther.

Farai Sewera, who is ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds, did not wrestle for the Kohawks.

Luther won all three of its meets Saturday.

Coe men bump off Dubuque

Matt Vonderhaar collected a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds Saturday as the Coe men's basketball team defeated Dubuque, 71-58, in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawks trailed 51-50 with 6 1/2 minutes left, but they outscored the Spartans 21-7 down the stretch for a clutch league victory.

Jake Timm matched Vonderhaar with 17 points for Coe (7-10, 2-4). Lincoln Vorba added 15 points for the Kohawks. Matt Meyer and Spencer Williams had eight points apiece.

Andre Norris scored 19 points for Dubuque (11-6, 4-2).

Kohawks win 7 titles at Cornell track

MOUNT VERNON - Members of the Coe College track program won seven events Saturday at the Cornell Invitational at the Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon.

The Coe men captured five titles and finished a tight second in the team standings behind Central College. The Kohawks got victories from Nathan Suell in the 200 (23.55), Erik Franklin in the 400 (51.34), Beau Freeborn in the 800 (2:01.15), Chris Hawkins in the 60 hurdles (8.65) and Hawkins in the triple jump (12.71 meters).

The Coe women won two events and finished fifth in the standings. The Kohawks got victories from Laura Bybee in the pole vault (3.2 meters) and Melissa Alger in the shot put (11.06 meters).

The Coe men got second-place showings from Dray Schreiber in the 800 and the 4x400 relay. The Kohawks got third-place finishes from Robbie Peters in the weight throw, Ben Nelson in the 800 and Gordan Rey in the pole vault.

The Coe women received second-place showings from Lucy Conroy in the 3000, Sammie Osterberger in the 60 hurdles and Christina Brown in the pole vault.

Hobbs nets double-double for Kohawks

Aleena Hobbs collected a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds Saturday, but it was not enough to save the Coe women's basketball team in a 74-64 loss to Dubuque in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse.

Jenna Lehman scored 12 points for the Kohawks (11-6, 2-4) and Mickey Hansche added 11 points.

Coe struggled with its 3-point shooting, hitting only 3 of 22.

Braanna Steen led a balanced attack for Dubuque (6-11, 1-5) with 17 points. Abbey Meyer and Emily Brinker had 16 points apiece for the Spartans. Meyer grabbed 12 rebounds.
