Okamoto leads Coe swimmers at Grinnell

GRINNELL – The Coe College swimming teams competed in Day 1 of the Grinnell Invitational on Friday. The Coe women scored 203 points for fifth place and the Coe men scored 174 for seventh place.

Freshman Ayaka Okamoto took second place in the 100 backstroke in 58.68 seconds for the Coe women, just .04 seconds off the school record. She also took fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Alanna Thompson was fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.43 for the third-fastest time in school history.

Sam Fitzgerald finished fourth in the 200 breatstroke and ninth in the 200 individual medley for the Coe women.

Corbin Faidley finished 10th in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.20, the second best in school history, for the Coe men.

Coe men snap 7-game slide

The Coe men's basketball team used a balanced attack to snap a seven-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 77-69 victory over Central College in an Iowa Conference game at Eby Fieldhouse.

Matt Vonderhaar paced the Kohawks (6-10, 1-4) with 14 points. Hunter Plufhaupt had 12 points, Marshall Shedeck 11, Christian Fahey 11 and Jacob Timm.

Timm made a bid for a triple-double with 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. He also had three steals.

Colby Taylor poured in 31 points for Central (12-4, 3-2).

Coe women blow past Central

Aleena Hobbs scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Coe women's basketball team past Central, 73-56, in an Iowa Conference game Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

Mickey Hansche led the Kohawks (11-5, 2-3) with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Jenna Lehman added 11 points for Coe.

Claire Marburger had a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to pace Central (4-12, 1-4).

Coe men still winless in league

DECORAH - The shooting woes got worse for the Coe men's basketball team Saturday.

The Kohawks made only 26.2 percent of their shots from the field and lost to Decorah, 63-47, in an Iowa Conference game at the Regents Center in Decorah.

Coe shot only 16 for 61 from the field in the frigid performance.

Marshall Shedeck collected a double-double for the Kohawks with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Hunter Pflughaupt scored 12 points for Coe and Matt Vonderhaar had 10.

Coe women fall at Luther

DECORAH - The Coe women's basketball team continued to struggle in Iowa Conference games Saturday with an 80-62 loss at Luther.

The Kohawks fell to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in the league. Coe led 32-29 at intermission, but the Kohawks were blitzed 51-30 in the second half.

Mickey Hansche and Jenna Lehman led Coe with 15 points apiece. Anna Madrigal and Moran Lanning scored 16 points for Luther (12-3, 4-0).
