Hawkins, Branch win at Grinnell track

GRINNELL - Chris Hawkins of Coe and Bri'anna Branch of Mount Mercy won titles at the Grinnell Invitational track meet Saturday.

Hawkins claimed the men's long jump at 22 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Branch captured the women's 60-meter dash in 8.05 seconds.

Laura Bybee of Coe placed second in the pole vault at 10 feet. The Coe women got third-place showings from Cassie Hocker in the 60 meter dash (8.16), Sammi Osterberger in the 200 (27.40) and Osterberger in the 60 hurdles (9.52).

The Coe men received third-place performances from Hawkins in the 60 hurdles (8.68), Beau Freeborn in the 800 (1:58.01) and Erik Franklin in the long jump (21-3 1/2).

The Mount Mercy women finished seventh in the team standings and the Coe women were eighth.

The Coe men placed sixth and the Mount Mercy men were 15th.

Grand View won the women's title and Simpson captured the men's crown.

Coe wrestlers nip Cornell, 23-22

MOUNT VERNON – The 15th-ranked Coe College wrestling team upset No. 11 Cornell College, 23-22, for the Kohawks’ 10th consecutive victory over the Rams on Thursday at Cornell.

Coe’s two top-ranked wrestlers each had technical falls. Farai Sewera scored a 16-1 win over Ben Hewson at 165 pounds and Ryan Harrington won 16-1 over Brian Cristion.

Jan Rosenberg had a pin at 125 for Coe.

Loras men hold off late Coe rush

Justin VanWambeke scored 29 points and Mirko Grcic added 20 as Loras held off a late comeback attempt to down Coe, 90-82, Wednesday in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game at Eby Fieldhouse.

Coe (7-13, 2-7) trailed by as many as 13 and was able to cut the margin to 86-82 on a Trevor Haaland 3-point basket with 18 seconds remaining, but wasn't able to draw any closer as Loras put the game away from the foul line.

Christian Fahey led Coe with 24 points. Matt Vonderhaar and Matt Meyer added 16 apiece.

Nolan Timp and Demond George each scored 10 points for the Duhawks (11-9, 6-3).

Loras downs Coe women, 72-57

Kaitlin Phillips scored 18 points and Kat Cabrera added 15 to lead Loras to a 72-57 Iowa Conference women's basketball win over Coe on Wednesday night at Eby Fieldhouse.

The Kohawk struggled from long range, hitting just 6-of-24 from beyond the 3-point line. Aleena Hobbs led Coe (13-7, 4-5) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jenna Lehman added 10 points.

Loras (14-6, 7-2) hit 20-of-22 from the foul line, including a perfect 12-of-12 from Phillips. Lori Obendorf had 10 rebounds for the Duhawks

Coe swimmers honored by Iowa Conference

Corbin Faidley and Ayaka Okamoto of Coe College have been named the Swimmers of the Week by the Iowa Conference.

Faidley, a freshman from Des Moines Hoover, collected four victories in two dual meets last week and set a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:00.51. This is the second time he has won the conference award this season.

Okamoto, a freshman from Tokyo, won seven races in a pair of dual meets last week. This is her second conference award as well.
