Bruyeres fires 70 at Viking Classic

POLK CITY - William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a 1-under-par 70  Monday and is sitting in second place at the GV Viking Classic at the  Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.

Andre Beccera and Rodrigo Navarette of Bellevue University are tied  for the lead at 2-under 69 heading into the final round Tuesday, with  Bruyeres just one shot behind.

Mount Mercy is in third place in the team standings, 16 shots behind  Bellevue heading into the final 18 holes.

Noble paces Mount Mercy women

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Casey Noble of Mount Mercy shot a 6-over-par 78  Monday and sits in third place at the Iowa Western Invitational at the  Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs heading into the final round  Tuesday.

Emily Spies of Iowa Western fired a 3-over 75 and leads the tournament  after 18 holes, with Noble three shots behind in third place.

Iowa Western has a slim one-shot lead over Mount Mercy, 330 to 331,  heading into the final round.

Mount Mercy trimmed by Benedictine

ATCHISON, Kan. - The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team suffered another tough loss Sunday with a 3-1 setback against Benedictine in a Heart of America Conference match in Kansas.

The Mustangs dropped the first two sets 25-20, 25-12, but they fought back with a 25-15 victory in the third set to stay alive. The Mustangs  battled Benedictine into overtime in the fourth set before falling short, 30-28.

Becca Thomson led the Mustangs with 14 kills. Alyssa Weldon had eight kills and Maddie Bell had six.

Kayla Daggett contributed 31 assists for Mount Mercy. Lauren Stopko had 14 digs, Gabi Delsing 12 and Weldon 11.

Mount Mercy fell to 14-9 overall and 3-7 in the conference. Benedictine raised its records to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the league.

   

Rough day for Mount Mercy teams

The Mount Mercy fall sports teams suffered a tough day on Saturday with both soccer teams, both cross country teams and the women's volleyball squad not able to experience success.

The women's soccer team lost to third-ranked Benedictine, 5-0, in wet and chilly conditions in a Heart of America Conference match at the Plaster Athletic Complex.

The men's soccer team was trimmed by 23rd-ranked Benedictine, 3-2, after building a 2-1 lead at home.

The Mount Mercy cross country teams competed at the Wartburg Invitational in Waverly, with the women finishing in 14th place and the men finishing 19th out of 19 teams without most of their top runners.

The women's volleyball team was trimmed by Baker University, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17, in Kansas.

Mount Mercy men blank Clarke

DUBUQUE - Souleymane Diallo scored a pair of goals Wednesday as the Mount Mercy men's soccer team blanked Clarke University, 3-0, in a Heart of America Conference match in Dubuque.

Diallo struck in the 24th minute of the first half to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Sava Dragic scored in the 87th minute for a 2-0 advantage, then Diallo scored less than two minutes later for a 3-0 lead.

Matias da Fonseca made three saves for the shutout.
