Mount Mercy applies to 2 leagues

Mount Mercy University has applied to two leagues for conference membership for the 2015-16 school year and expects to learn in January or February if it has been accepted for membership into either one.

Mount Mercy is currently a member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference, but that league is disbanding after this school year. The Mustangs applied for membership in the Chicagoland Conference earlier this year, but they fell one vote short of admittance.

Scot Reisinger, the athletic director at Mount Mercy, declined to identify the leagues it hopes to join, but the options are fairly limited in terms of an NAIA conference that serves the Midwest. He said one of the leagues will vote in January whether to admit the Mustangs and the other league will vote in February, assuming the Mustangs are still looking at that time.

Reisinger said he is "very confident" Mount Mercy will be accepted by one league or the other - or possibly both. "We've gotten good feedback," he said.

Herb rakes in conference honor

Abby Herby of the Mount Mercy women's basketball team has been named the Female Athlete of the Week by the Midwest Collegiate Conference.

Herb, a sophomore, was named the MVP of the Roosevelt Holiday Hoops Tournament in Chicago this past weekend. She averaged 31 points in the tournament, including a career-best 35 points against St. Francis (Ill.). She shot 65.8 percent from the field.

Herb, a Cedar Rapids Washington graduate, also had 13 rebounds, eight assists, seven blocks and three steals.

Herb leads Mount Mercy to title

CHICAGO - Abby Herb scored 27 points Saturday and was named the tournament MVP as Mount Mercy dunked Roosevelt, 87-71, in the championship game of the Roosevelt Holiday Hoops in Chicago.

Herb poured in 35 points in the opening round Friday and finished the tournament with 62 points. She had six rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two assists in the finals against Roosevelt.

Christa Oldham collected 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Mount Mercy in the finals and joined Herb on the all-tournament team.

Makenzie Zeitler had a double-double for the Mustangs Saturday with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Paige Last also scored 12 points. Last and Oldham both had four 3-pointers for Mount Mercy (8-7).

Herb scores 35 in OT win

CHICAGO – Abby Herb had 35 points and three blocks to lead the Mount Mercy women’s basketball team in a 77-74 overtime win over St. Francis (Illinois) in the first round of the Roosevelt Holiday Hoops Tournament on Friday at the Lillian and Larry Goodman Center.

Herb shot 14-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, for the Mustangs (7-7). Christa Oldham had 15 points and five assists, and Makenzie Zeitler had 11 rebounds.

After finishing regulation tied 65-65, Mount Mercy took a 12-9 edge in the overtime period.

Katie Gonnering had 28 points for St. Francis, which fell to 3-11.

The Mustangs will play in the championship game of the tournament today.
