Mount Mercy falls to No.2 Midland

FREMONT, Neb. - The Mount Mercy Mustangs lost to powerful Midland (Neb.), 76-65, in the championship game of the Draemel Classic Saturday.

Midland (10-1) is ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division II men's basketball.

Mount Mercy chopped a 15-point deficit down to just six points, 62-56, on a layup by Ben Struss with 7:32 remaining, but the Mustangs (7-3) could draw no closer the rest of the way.

Alex Houston led Mount Mercy with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Dondre Osborne scored 13 points.

Mustangs trim Dakota State in tourney

FREMONT, Neb. - James Boonstoppel made two free throws in the final seconds Friday night to help Mount Mercy hold off Dakota State, 73-72, in the semifinals of the Draemel Classic at the Event Center in Fremont, Neb.

Boonstoppel gave the Mustangs a 73-69 lead with his two free throws. Adam Hofer hit a 3-pointer to pull Dakota State within 73-72, but the Mustangs passed the ball in-bounds to secure the victory.

Mount Mercy will play in the championship round Saturday.

Alex Houston led the Mustangs (7-2) with 16 points. Dondre Osborne finished with 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Ben Struss made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Boonstoppel contributed 10 points.

Miguel Sansavour scored 20 points for Dakota Stae (2-6).

Simpson rallies past Mount Mercy

INDIANOLA - The Simpson College women’s basketball team came back from a 31-27 halftime deficit to beat Mount Mercy University, 77-61, Tuesday in Indianola.

Abby Herb had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs, Makenzie Zeitler had 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Christa Oldham had eight assists.

Simpson had three players score in double digits, led by MacKenzie Haupt with 17 points.

Simpson improved to 4-1, while Mount Mercy fell to 5-3.

Osborne sparks Mustangs by Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - Dondre Osborne poured in 26 points, collected seven assists and had four steals Saturday night as Mount Mercy bopped Wisconsin-Platteville, 80-71, in an NAIA men's basketball game at Bo Ryan Court.

James Boonstoppel hit three 3-pointers and scored 18 points for the Mustangs (6-2). Ian Matos added 13 points for Mount Mercy. Ben Struss grabbed seven rebounds.

The Mustangs made 28 of 50 shots for 56 percent.

Jim Stocki scored 15 points for Platteville (3-1). Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad Jake Manning scored 13 points for the hosts.

Oldham nets triple-double for Mustangs

Christa Oldham scored 15 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 10 assists Saturday as Mount Mercy trimmed Iowa Wesleyan, 80-75, in an NAIA women's basketball game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Oldham's triple-double lifted the Mustangs to a 4-2 record.

Abby Herb also scored 15 points for Mount Mercy. Callan Timms finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Timms and Alisa Weiland both hit three 3-pointers.

Whitney Gooden led Iowa Wesleyan (0-1) with 17 points. The visitors made 12 3-pointers, but Mount Mercy won the game at the foul line by hitting 28 of 35 charity tosses for 80 percent.
