Mustangs rained out in Purgatory

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The second round of the Purgatory Intercollegiate golf tournament was rained out Saturday, shrinking the event to the 18 holes that were played Friday.

William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a 1-under-par 71 Friday and tied for eighth place, four shots behind the leaders.

Natalea Cook of Mount Mercy shot a 4-over 76 Friday and tied for eighth place in the women's standings.

Bruyeres leads Mustangs at Purgatory Invite

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - William Bruyeres of Mount Mercy fired a  1-under-par 71 Friday at the Purgatory Intercollegiate golf tournament  and is tied for eighth place heading into the final round Saturday.

Bruyeres is four shots behind the co-leaders after 18 holes.

Natalea Cook of Mount Mercy shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for eighth  place in the women's standings. The Mount Mercy women are in fourth  place in the team standings and the Mount Mercy men are in ninth place.

Mustangs get 2 walk-off victories

The Mount Mercy baseball team came through in the clutch Wednesday to  sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Viterbo, 8-7 and 4-3, at the  Plaster Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs won both of the games in their final at-bat for a pair of  walk-off victories.

Kobi Candaroma, Tito Berdecia, Corbin Day and Parker Johnson had two  hits for Mount Mercy in the 8-7 victory in Game 1. Owen Oreskovich  drove in three runs. Manny Olutunde and Day had two RBIs. Candaroma  and Nick Sueppel scored twice.

The opener was tied 7-7 going into the bottom of the eighth in extra  innings. Viterbo pitcher Austin Stibbe hit three batters in the frame  and plunked Oreskovich with the bases loaded to force in the winning  run.

Viterbo took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of the  nightcap, Nick Sueppel made it 3-2 when he was hit by a pitch with the  bases loaded, then Berdecia delivered a two-run single to win the game.

No. 8 Mustangs clinch tie for Heart title

DUBUQUE - The eighth-ranked Mount Mercy men's volleyball team clinched  at least a tie for the Heart of America Conference regular-season  title Tuesday night with a clutch victory in Dubuque.

The Mustangs trimmed Clarke, 3-2, in their final match of the league  campaign to finish the season with a 9-1 record in the conference.

Grand View, which is ranked No. 4 in the country, is currently 8-1 in  the conference and can tie Mount Mercy with a victory over Graceland  Thursday night in its final match of the regular season.

Mount Mercy and Clarke traded victories in the first four sets,  leaving the match tied at 2-2 heading into the final set. The Mustangs  prevailed, 15-11, in the fifth set to earn a share of the conference  crown.

Mount Mercy won 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-11.

Babcock earns top spot at Eagle Spring Classic

Will Babcock of Kirkwood fired a 4-under-par 68 Monday to capture the  top prize at the Eagle Spring Classic at Hunters Ridge.

Babcock finished at 6-under 138 for the 36-hole event and topped  Philip Nelson of Mount Mercy by three shots. William Bruyeres of Mount  Mercy and Dawson Peters of Kirkwood tied for third at 1-under 143.

Mount Mercy trimmed Kirkwood by four strokes, 582 to 586, for the team  championship in the six-team field.
