Hargens leads Kennedy golfers at Ellis

Sierra Hargens of Kennedy fired a 6-over-par 42 Tuesday at Ellis Park to share medalist honors in a Mississippi Valley Conference quadrangular meet.

Lourdes Allen de Salazar of Hempstead also shot a 42, leading her team to the title.

Team Standings

1. Hempstead 182, 2. Kennedy 188, 3. Jefferson 244, Waterloo East 263.

Kennedy: Sierra Hargens 42, Val Davidson 44, Nicole DeCoste 50, Abby Krueger 52, Abbie Haller 57, Katie Choate 58.

Manning commits to Wisconsin-La Crosse

Brendon Manning of Cedar Rapids Kennedy has committed to play college basketball at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Manning, a 6-foot-4 forward, made his decision Monday night. Wisconsin-La Crosse is an NCAA Division III school that competes in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Manning led Kennedy in scoring and rebounding this season at 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He shot 57.0 percent from the field and had 43 steals.

Manning was named first team all-Metro, first team all-MVC and third team all-state by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Kennedy finished 18-6 and reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament.

Manning's older brother, Jake, was a senior at Wisconsin-Platteville this season.

 

Hemaidan leads Kennedy tennis team

Kennedy freshman Rami Hemaidan won both of his matches at No. 1 singles Saturday as the Cougars split a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference boys tennis meets with teams from Dubuque.

Hemaidan rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory as Kennedy blanked Hempstead, 9-0. He posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory as the Cougars lost to Wahlert, 6-3.

Kennedy has a 1-2 record.

Kennedy girls fall to Dubuque teams

DUBUQUE - The Kennedy girls tennis team dropped a pair of 8-1 verdicts to Dubuque Hempstead and Dubuque Wahlert Saturday in Mississippi Valley Conference meets in Dubuque.

Aubree Langhurst and Aimee Ermer won their match at No. 2 doubles for the Cougars against Hempstead.

Rachel Pickering won her match at No. 5 singles against Wahlert.

No. 4 Kennedy falls to No. 5 Valley

WEST DES MOINES - No. 5 West Des Moines Valley scored on a penalty kick with two minutes left in the second overtime to edge No. 4 Kennedy, 2-1, on Friday night in West Des Moines.

Kennedy, 1-2, scored first in the 28th minute on a goal from Sam Hanzelka. Valley tied the game early in the second half before getting the win in overtime.

   

Coker sparks Kennedy to track title

DUBUQUE - Jackson Coker uncorked a throw of 170 feet, 11 inches in the discus Thursday to help the Kennedy Cougars claim top honors at the Harley Sweet Invitational in Dubuque.

Coker's toss was the second-longest in the state this year.

Kennedy won the championship with 129 points. Washington placed third, Jefferson was fifth and Prairie finished sixth in the 11-team field.

Willie Rhoads won the high jump for the Cougars at 6 feet, 5 inches.

No.4 Kennedy boys trip IC West

Mark Schulz scored two goals Thursday night as the fourth-ranked Kennedy soccer team edged No. 14 Iowa City West, 3-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

Kennedy took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sam Hanzelka with an assist from Jacob Sarasin. Iowa City West grabbed a 2-1 lead, but Schulz responded for the Cougars.

Schulz tied the game, 2-2, in the 55th minute with assists from Skylar Showalter and Ryan Walker. He gave Kennedy the lead for good seven minutes later.

Kennedy squared its record at 1-1. Iowa City West fell to 3-3.

   

Linn-Mar boys win twice in Iowa City

IOWA CITY - The Linn-Mar Lions captured two relays at the Forwald/Coleman Relays in Iowa City Thursday.

The Lions captured the 4x200 relay in 1:29.25 and claimed the shuttle hurdle relay in 59.27, with Daniel Gorsich running the anchor leg both times.

Austin Flieder, Tristan Freese and Griffin Freese joined Gorsich on the 4x200 relay. Isaac Baumhoefener, Nick House and Zeal Baker ran with Gorsich on the shuttle hurdle relay.

Pleasant Valley won the boys title at the meet. Linn-Mar placed fifth out of eight teams.

Waukee claimed the girls title. Linn-Mar finished seventh and Kennedy was eighth.

 

Kennedy girls nipped by IC West

The Kennedy girls golf team was trimmed by Iowa City West, 180 to 181, in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual meet at Ellis Park Thursday.

Valarie Davidson and Sierra Hargens of Kennedy shared medalist honors at 4-over-par 40.

Kennedy: Valarie Davidson 40, Sierra Hargens 40, Katie Choate 48, Avery Haefner 53, Nicole DeCoste 54, Abigail Haller 54.

No.4 Kennedy girls kicked by IC West

The fourth-ranked Kennedy girls soccer team was trimmed by No. 9 Iowa City West, 3-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match Thursday at Kennedy.

Sydney Hayden scored both of the goals for Kennedy.

Emma Cooper scored twice for Iowa City West. Heelah Nadler also tallied for the Women of Troy.
