Vinton-Shellsburg tops Marion boys, 70-62

Grant Sagan poured in 24 points Friday night as Vinton-Shellsburg defeated Marion, 70-62, in a Wamac Conference basketball game at Marion.

Max Kearns chipped in with 17 points for the Vikings.

Tyler Gunderson led Marion with 18 points and Daly Quinn added 11.

VINTON-SHELLSBURG (70): Kearns 7 3-3 17, Rickels 4 2-3 10, G.Sagan 11 2-3 24, Merchant 0 3-5 3, Overton 0 1-2 1, Williams 0 0-0 0, Griffith 4 0-0 11, Dinderman 0 0-0 0, N.Sagan 0 0-0 0, Moen 2 0-0 4. Totals 28 11-19 70.

Knapp's 14 pace Marion girls to win

Beth Knapp led four scorers in double figures with 14 points that powered Marion past Clear Creek Amana, 62-52, Tuesday night in a Wamac Conference girls basketball game at Marion.

Amanda Sahm added 12 points, and Emi Banes and Micaela Combs scored 10 points apiece for Marion.

The Indians held a 34-17 lead at halftime and led 42-26 after three quarters. Clear Creek Amana got as close as 57-50 with a minute left in the game.

Marion hands J-Hawk boys 1st loss

Jefferson's second trip to Marion in as many nights didn't go quite as well as its first one.

The J-Hawks ended a nine-season drought against Linn-Mar on Friday night, but couldn't solve Marion's mighty mites on Saturday.

Marion handed the J-Hawks their first loss of the season, 61-47, in a non-conference boys basketball game at Marion High School.

Marion boys spank Benton, 54-40

Tyler Gunderson scored 18 points Friday night as the Marion Indians defeated Benton Community, 54-40, in a Wamac Conference game at Marion.

Daly Quinn chipped in with 14 points for Marion (2-2) and Isaac Frazier added 12.

Jonny Frese led Benton (1-3) with 15 points.

Marion rally falls short at Benton

VAN HORNE -- Marion cut a 12-point deficit to four, but could get no closer and was beaten by Class 4A No. 3 Benton Community, 55-48, Friday night in Wamac Conference girls basketball.

Michalyn Mohr scored 10 points to lead Marion (3-3, 3-2). Four Indians had eight points apiece.

Sarah Petrzelka's 19 points led Benton (5-0).
