Saints take 3rd at Hempstead tourney

DUBUQUE - The Xavier Saints compiled a 3-2 record Saturday and placed third at the Dubuque Hempstead volleyball tournament.

The Saints defeated Pleasant Valley in the quarterfinals, 21-15, 21-18, but then lost to Hempstead for the second time Saturday in the semifinals, 21-19, 21-16.

The Kennedy Cougars went 1-3 in the tournament and tied for fifth place. The Jefferson J-Hawks went 1-4.

No.1 Saints blank Cougars again, 24-0

Maybe they should change the name of that stretch of 42nd Street that runs between Xavier and Kennedy on the northeast side of town, because it tilts heavily to Xavier's end of the block these days.

During the high school football season, they could call it "The Avenue of the Saints" because all of signs point in Xavier's direction.

The stingy top-ranked Saints blanked Kennedy for the third straight year Friday night, 24-0, for their sixth straight regular-season victory over the Cougars since 2008.

Xavier (5-0) held Kennedy (3-2) to just 76 yards of total offense. The Cougars punted the ball 10 times out of 11 possessions, collected only four first downs and crossed midfield only once.

Gorman, Xavier girls win X-C races

IOWA CITY - Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington captured first place at the Eastern Iowa Classic cross country meet at the University of Iowa course Thursday.

Gorman covered the 4 kilometer layout in 14 minutes, 56.04 seconds. She finished 41 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

The Xavier High School girls won the team championship by 22 points over Dubuque Hempstead. The Saints had three runners finish in the top-10 with Jenny Dickes (4th), Marinna Schroud (8th) and Addy Hoffman (9th).

Saints up to 7th in volleyball poll

Xavier moved up one spot to No.7 and Marion two positions to No.10 in the Class 4A volleyball rankings released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Bettendorf is the No.1 team in Class 5A, Harlan in 4A, Sheldon in 3A, Dike-New Hartford in 2A and Holy Trinity in 1A.

Scholtes gives Saints big assist

IOWA CITY - Britni Scholtes collected 49 assists and 14 digs Tuesday night to help the Xavier Saints clip Iowa City High, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-14 in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Iowa City.

Kayla Torson contributed 21 kills and four blocks for the Saints (15-5). Halle Heying came up with 19 digs and 13 aces.

Kasey Vanden Bosch had 12 kills and Kara Zwanziger blocked five shots.
