IOWA CITY - Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington captured first place at the Eastern Iowa Classic cross country meet at the University of Iowa course Thursday.

Gorman covered the 4 kilometer layout in 14 minutes, 56.04 seconds. She finished 41 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

The Xavier High School girls won the team championship by 22 points over Dubuque Hempstead. The Saints had three runners finish in the top-10 with Jenny Dickes (4th), Marinna Schroud (8th) and Addy Hoffman (9th).

Washington placed third in the girls team standings. Prairie finished 6th, Linn-Mar 7th and Kennedy 9th in the nine-team field. Several teams ran varsity reserves in the meet.

The Xavier boys placed second out of 10 teams in their race. Jacob Schmitt finished ninth for the Saints.

Addison Furry was the top Metro runner in the boys race in fifth place. Jon Specht of Dubuque Hempstead won the race in 16:16.74 as Hempstead ran away with the title.

Xavier placed second in the boys race. Kennedy was 5th, Washington 7th and Linn-Mar 8th.
