Prairie sweeps into first place in MVC

DUBUQUE - The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team swept a doubleheader from Dubuque Hempstead Thursday, 8-3 and 10-1, and replaced the Mustangs at the top of the Mississippi Division standings.

Prairie raised its Mississippi Valley Conference record to 11-3 and dropped Hempstead to 10-4, moving a full game ahead of the Mustangs in the division.

Cal Clark, Trey Beckman and Tyler Nunemaker had two hits for Prairie in the first game. Nic Mougin started for the Hawks and pitched four shutout innings, but left with the game still scoreless. Mougin allowed only one hit.

JP Havel-Pisarik got the victory in relief and Jared Street was credited with a save.

Cooper Reittinger went 3-for-4 and scored two runs in the 10-1 verdict in the nightcap. Jalen Rima went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs. Clark, Corbin Day and Ethan Copeland had two hits. Clark collected two RBIs.

Brody Alberts tossed six strong innings for the victory. He struck out six batters and did not walk anyone.

Prairie raised its overall record to 16-4. Hempstead fell to 13-7.

Lions, Cougars placed in same substate

The dream of having four Metro baseball teams reach the Class 4A state tournament was dashed by the Iowa High School Athletic Association Thursday.

The IHSAA put No. 7 Linn-Mar and No. 9 Kennedy in the same substate, which means only one of them can make the state tournament. The Lions swept the Cougars in a conference doubleheader earlier this season and have the edge for the No. 1 seed in the substate.

Cedar Falls, Marshalltown, Waterloo East and Waterloo West are in Substate No. 3 with Linn-Mar and Kennedy.

No.8 Prairie Hawks sweep Tigers

The eighth-ranked Prairie baseball team parlayed good hitting, good pitching and good defense into a pair of victories over Cedar Falls Tuesday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Prairie.

The Hawks won the first game, 9-0, and captured the nightcap, 8-1.

Ethan Copeland went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs in the 9-0 victory. Cal Clark and Cooper Reittinger had two hits, with Clark collecting a triple. Jared Cadena drove in two runs.

Drew Yanecek struck out seven batters and got the victory for Prairie in the first game. The Hawks exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take command.

Prairie softball splits with Waterloo West

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader against Waterloo West Tuesday in Waterloo.

Waterloo West won the first game, 11-5. Prairie rebounded and claimed the nightcap, 13-6.

Gabi Carter had two hits for Prairie in the opener. Carsyn Waller had two RBIs. Natalie Halvorson suffered the loss.

Neila Bell wins Metro Spotlight Award

Neila Bell of Cedar Rapids Prairie is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bell, a junior, has burst onto the scene this season as a strong hitter and catcher for the Prairie Hawks after getting only seven at-bats last year as a sophomore. She is hitting .359 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 21 games.

Bell went 9-for-18 with three doubles and seven RBIs in six games for Prairie last week. The Hawks swept a doubleheader from Xavier on Tuesday, split a doubleheader with sixth-ranked Jefferson on Wednesday and split another twinbill with 10th-ranked Linn-Mar on Thursday.
