NAIA hoops tourney set for C.R. this weekend

Mount Mercy University was delighted when it was admitted into the Heart of America Conference last year, but their basketball teams will not start competing in the league until next season.

That left the Mustangs as a basketball orphan this season. That led to them joining the Association of Independent Institutions, which is an informal conference that's administered by the NAIA for schools that need a league and teams to play.

And that led Mount Mercy to acting as the host for the AII men's and women's basketball tournaments that will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in downtown Cedar Rapids.

If you see a lot of tall people walking around Cedar Rapids this weekend, you'll know why.

There are eight teams in both tournaments, which will be held morning, afternoon and night at the Cell Center. Mount Mercy received an automatic spot in the tournament as the host, but the Mustangs earned their way into the tournament anyway with successful campaigns.

Kleinhaus-Schulz joins Kernels broadcasts

Chris Kleinhaus-Schulz is only 26 years old, but he's already being a radio broadcaster for minor league baseball teams in Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Now Kleinhaus-Schulz, who grew up in Waverly, is excited about moving to Cedar Rapids and becoming one of the broadcasters for the Kernels in the Class A Midwest League right here in his native state.

Morgan Hawk has been the play-by-play voice for the Kernels for the past five years on KMRY, but he has accepted additional duties in the Kernels organization as the sales manager for the Waterloo Bucks in a summer collegiate league. Kleinhaus-Schulz will join Hawk in the radio booth for some games, especially early in the season, but he will have primary responsibility for road games and will handle the home games when Hawk is busy in Waterloo.

Parents complain to L-M school board

The Linn-Mar parents who are unhappy with the school's football program took their complaints to the Linn-Mar school board Monday evening during an emotional session at the LRC Boardroom in Marion.

The parents have accused Linn-Mar football coaches with physical, verbal, mental and emotional abuse by taunting, harassing and injuring their sons during formal school activities. Most of the complaints have been filed against assistant coach Matt Casebolt and head coach Bob Forsyth.

The parents originally filed their complaints with the Linn-Mar school district, but all of their complaints have been dismissed by the district due to "insufficient evidence" following an in-house investigation.

The families are in the process of filing a formal complaint with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners. And although they have previously complained to school board president Tim Isenberg about the alleged abuses, they wanted to speak before the full school board and air their complaints publicly Monday.

Saints roll into district finals

The Xavier Saints needed a game where they could score lots of points and feel good about themselves again.

They needed a laugher Monday night and they got it.

The Saints crushed Williamsburg, 90-47, in the semifinals of the Class 3A district tournament at Xavier to snap a six-game losing streak and move within two victories of reaching the state tournament.

Xavier (14-8) will face Clear Creek Amana (12-10) Thursday at 7 p.m. in the district finals at Prairie.

The Saints played a brutal schedule during the last three weeks of the Mississippi Valley Conference with games against state powers like Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, Cedar Falls and Dubuque Wahlert. They also had to deal with injuries to star guards Mitchell Burger and Matt Mims during that six-game skid, which dropped their record from a glossy 13-2 to 13-8.

Jefferson slips past Warriors, 55-52

If ever there was a proverbial team win, the Jefferson boys earned one Monday night.

The heroes were many as they hung-on and hung together down the stretch to eke out  a 55-52 Class 4A substate victory over Washington in the Prairie gym.

Savvy senior Adam Van Oort kept them in the game in the first half, and sparkplug point guard Royshawn Webb took control in the second.

Jack-of-all-trades Valentino Green, as usual, was all over the floor taking charges, diving for loose balls, making steals and crashing the boards.

And how about quiet junior Kane Kramer?

He came back in the game with 10 seconds to go, was immediately fouled and calmly sank two free throws to give the J-Hawks a three-point cushion.

“That’s who we wanted with the ball,” said Jefferson Coach Brandon Horman. “You ask the guys on the team and they’ll tell you we want Kane on the line. He just never gets rattled.”
