IHSAA did good job with football districts

Some of us are quick to criticize the Iowa High School Athletic Association when they do something that appears slightly askew, so it's only fair to applaud them when they do something right.

And when it comes to the new assignments for district football, the IHSAA got it right.

The state association treated our Metro teams very fairly with the district assignments that were announced this past week. And even though the playoff field has been cut in half for the 2016 and 2017 campaign, most of our teams should have a good shot at making the postseason tournament.

There are no head-shakers in the assignments and no districts where it's obvious that somebody got a raw deal.

Let's start with District 8 in Class 4A, where the Kennedy Cougars were rewarded for their remarkable season this fall when they marched all the way to the state finals and finished with a 13-1 record.

Nobody else in District 8 had a winning record in 2015, although several teams came close. Ottumwa went 4-5, Prairie and Linn-Mar finished 4-6, Iowa City West went 4-7 and Burlington was 1-8.

Saulnier, Kelley, Hummell win titles

IOWA CITY – With two weeks to taper before they go for their 53rd straight district swim title, the Washington boys tuned up by turning in a surprisingly strong showing at the MVC Super Meet Saturday at the University of Iowa pool.

“I’m just blown away by how well we did as a team,” said Warrior senior Nick Saulnier. “We had guys dropping two seconds, five seconds, even more off their times.

“It was crazy some of the time drops we had.”

Saulnier himself topped his season’s best in easily winning the 200 yard individual medley, and junior teammate Cameron Kelley chopped 11 seconds off in pulling an upset in the 500 freestyle.

No. 22 Mustangs win 7th in row

Chris Ford led a balanced attack with 12 points Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Mount Mercy men's basketball team trimmed Viterbo, 79-74, in an NAIA game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Ford led five Mustangs into double figures. Alex Houston scored 11 points and Tre Wagner, Mychael Brawner-Henley and Ben Struss all scored 10 points apiece for the winners.

Ford broke a 69-69 tie with a 3-pointer with 68 seconds left to give Mount Mercy (17-5) a 72-69 lead. The Mustangs were clinging to a 75-74 lead when Struss went to work in the final seconds. His layup gave Mount Mercy a 77-74 edge with 22 seconds remaining, then Viterbo missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with 14 seconds to go.

Struss hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to make it 79-74 and secure the victory as Mount Mercy won its seventh game in a row.

The Mustangs got a big lift from their subs with a 39-6 advantage in bench points.

Jake Bamke scored 25 points for Viterbo (7-13) and Ethan Haberman had 24. Viterbo trailed by 20 points at halftime, but the visitors staged a strong comeback in the second half.
