Mustang spikers reach Heart semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Mount Mercy women's volleyball team trimmed  Evangel, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Heart of America Conference  tournament Saturday.

The Mustangs prevailed 14-25, 25-10, 25-15, 21-25, 15-10.

Mount Mercy (21-11) will face Grand View (26-9) in the semifinals  Wednesday night in Des Moines.

Maddie Bell collected 12 kills, nine blocks and five digs to help  spark the Mustangs. Mackenzie Murphy contributed 14 kills and seven  digs. Madelyn Orton had 11 kills and Abbi Tunis had nine.

Appel shines as No. 1 Eagles top Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - Luke Appel collected a double-double with 20  points and 11 rebounds Friday night as the Kirkwood Eagles defeated  Coffeyville, 74-54, with a big second half at the Community State Bank  Classic at Coffeyville.

Kirkwood is ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II men's basketball.  Coffeyville is ranked No. 17 in the Division I ranks. The outcome left  both teams at 3-1 for the young season.

DJ Purnell posted his third straight double-double for the Eagles with  12 points and 12 rebounds. Devonte Thedford finished with 15 points,  six rebounds and four assists. Seybian Sims pitched in 12 points for  Kirkwood.

Meikkel Murray and Kymani Dunham scored 11 points apiece for Coffeyville.

Kirkwood trailed 31-26 at halftime, but the Eagles smoked Coffeyville  48-23 in the second half for the 20-point victory.

No. 2 KCC women facing No. 1 team

Everybody played for the Kirkwood women's basketball team Friday night  and everybody scored as the No. 2 Eagles drubbed John Wood Community  College, 77-40, in the opening round of the Kirkwood Classic at  Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood will face top-ranked Kansas City (Kan.) in the second round  Saturday at 3 p.m. in a showdown for bragging rights in NJCAA Division  II.

Paige Bradford and Delani Harris scored 12 points apiece for Kirkwood  Friday. Marissa Metz tossed in 10 markers for the winners. Tatiana  Hodges-Johnson grabbed eight rebounds.

Coach Kim Muhl used all 12 players on his active roster and all 12  found their way into the scoring column. Sophomore Ashley Tull is  still recovering from knee surgery last February and is scheduled to  begin practice in December.

McKinney powers Mustangs by Waldorf

FOREST CITY - Dennis McKinney poured in 29 points Friday night as the  Mount Mercy Mustangs topped Walforf, 83-72, in an NAIA men's  basketball game in Forest City.

McKinney shot 10 for 18 from the field and hit four 3-pointers for the  Mustangs (3-0). He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Christian Reischauer tossed in 13 points for Mount Mercy.

Brady Kuchinka and Melvin Martin scored 16 points for Waldorf (1-3).

No. 1 Eagles roll by William Penn JV

The top-ranked Kirkwood men's basketball team rolled to a 103-64  victory over the William Penn junior varsity Tuesday night in the home  opener at Johnson Hall.

DJ Purnell led the Eagles (2-1) with 18 points and 11 rebounds for his  second straight double-double. Gacoby Jones came off the bench to  score 17 points in 15 minutes, hitting 7-for-8 from the field.

Niko Gosnell scored 13 points and blocked three shots for Kirkwood.  Owen Coburn finished with a double-double with 10 points and 13  rebounds.

The Eagles made 42 of 75 shots for 56.0 percent from the field.
