Kirkwood women trimmed in opener

SEDALIA, Mo. - The Kirkwood women's basketball team was nipped by State Fair, 53-52, in the season opener Friday night at the State Fair Classic in Sedalia, Mo.

The Eagles led by five points with about two minutes remaining but could not hold on in a hard-fought game.

"It was a fight. It was a fist-fight, is what it was," Kirkwood coach Kim Muhl said. "Our kids stepped up pretty well."

Kirkwood is ranked No. 6 in the nation in the NJCAA Division II poll. State Fair is ranked No. 13 in NJCAA Division I.

Cyerra Hutchins led the Eagles with 17 points. Casey Miles added 13. Caitlin Sudduth scored nine points.

Mount Mercy women fall in opener

DES MOINES - The Mount Mercy women's basketball team opened the season with an 80-59 loss to Dakota State in the first round of the Grand View Classic on Friday Night in Des Moines.

Makenzie Zeitler led the Mustangs with 12 points and seven rebounds. Mount Mercy shot only 32.8 percent from the field and hurt themselves with 27 turnovers.

BreeAna Olson poured in 21 points for Dakota State.

Warriors escape Cedar Falls, 28-21

The Cedar Falls Tigers who played at Kingston Stadium on Wednesday night may have been the toughest No. 4 seed in the history of the high school football playoffs.

Just ask the Washington Warriors. Fortunately for the Warriors, they survived to talk about it.

Washington rallied for a 28-21 victory over Cedar Falls in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs with some magnificent individual performances and a big-play defense in the second half.

RoughRiders edged by Bloomington Thunder

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders were trimmed by the Bloomington Thunder, 4-3, in a USHL game before 1,925 fans Friday night at the Ice Arena.

Bloomington jumped to a 3-1 lead in the first period and made it 4-1 in the second period before the RoughRiders staged a comeback.

Ross Colton scored his second goal of the game to pull Cedar Rapids within 4-2 in the second period. Matt Goslewski pulled the RoughRiders within 4-3 with 23 seconds left in the contest, but the home team ran out of time and could not score again.

Ben Blacker made 25 saves for the RoughRiders.

Coe swimmers dunk Loras in opener

The Coe College men's and women's swimming teams opened the season with victories over Loras on Friday night at the Coe pool.

Corbin Faidley and Collin Flynn were double-winners as the Coe men's team topped Loras, 121-83. Faidley claimed the 200 free (1:50.89) and 500 free (4:55.92). Flynn captured the 200 IM (2:03.29) and the 100 back (54.87).

Andy Cheng won the 1000 free (11:02.44) and Timmy Bosn took the 100 free (51.97). The Kohawks also won the 200 medley relay (1:41.83).

Ayaka Okamoto, Alanna Thompson, Katie King and Sam Fitzgerald were double-winners for the Coe women's team in a 127-100 triumph over Loras.
